J&S Bouchard
My beautiful Shai came to live with me in May of 2002. I bought him at a
Barrie pet store, after seeing him cramped in a 10 gallon tank with his two
brothers and two older rats. The older rats where picking on the young ones
that were always cowering in a corner. So I bought Shai and his two
brothers. Shai was a slate blue american berkshire Dumbo... a beautiful rat
for sure. He developed myco at a very young age and in his short life has
been medicated on three different occasion. Most recently the meds didn't
work and Shai left me today at 2:42PM, a very young 18 months. It was a long
struggle for him but he died in my arms. I told him it was ok to go... that
I would see him again some day... I feel comforted in knowing that Shai is
joining Koko, Ira and Maxwell... and I'm sure together they are having a
great time at the bridge. His body has been buried in our Angels Garden with
the others.
Shai was a misunderstood rat. The average person would think him to be an
aggressive biter, but he wasn't. He was just scared all the time probably
from the early abuse. When I put him in his own cage with his two brothers,
he calmed down big time and became so sweet. When I offered him food, he
would gently take it from my fingers being so careful as to not touch me.
Shai was strong and took no beef from no one but he was fair. I love you my
darling Shai...

you *are* a true rat lover... I feel the same about my pipo who's
sometimes nipping people's fingers (not mine tho, how odd...) when they
stick them through the cage. people just cant handle the fact that a rat
is a living creature, who has every right to feel territory, or just
plain moody (it's just a quick hardly painful nip, I'm not even talking
about hard mean bites). And the same people will repeatedly test him,
stick fingers through the bars, eventually get nipped again, and whine,
instead of playing with mumu who's the calm and wise type of guy.
sometimes I feel that people are not too interested in trying to
understand pets' point of views.

anyway, I'm sorry for shai, his life has been really short, you seem to
take it with great wisdom and compassion. my ratties are 15 months now,
and although they are in great shape, i cant help thinking about the
time when they'll begin to show signs of old age, weakness, god knows
what else... I hope i can handle it like you do.

take care.

Dear Joanne,
We are so very sorry to hear of Shai's passing. It is always that little bit
harder to take when they are relatively young.I know we always say this but
it is true - how lucky Shai was to have you as his mom.

I'm so sorry to hear of Shai's passing. It seems he had a very good life with
you, though short. I have lost 2 birds since May and can not imagine having to
go through any more loss anytime soon. My thoughts are with you..... stay
strong.

Joanne, I'm so very sorry to hear about little Shai. He had the best home,
full of all the love and care any rattie could ever wish for. Like Shai, my
little Oscar died in my arms and I whispered to him goodbye and that I would
see him again one day, almost straight after my words he died. I'm sure
they understand. And I'm sure we'll all be re-united one day.

My thought are with you at this sad time.

Hi Joanne..
I am so sorry for your loss.
Keep the memory alive.. sometimes I have these really vivid memories
of my two rats that died last year. Their lives may be short but they
leave so much behind.
They never really go away!
