it seems that one of my rats is getting a white spot in one of his eyes.
He's almost 2 years old now, but he's in perfect health (if not a bit
porky).

What could be causing this, is it a cataract, and what can we do to stop
or remove it?

thanks.

If this is actually rodent glaucoma it is caused by an infection that is
treatable. If you do regular vet check-ups anyway, might be time for a
full physical with special attention to the eyes.

It is more likely a cataract and nothing can be done -- the surgery would
need to be as sophisticated as for a human being but eency weency, & I
wouldn't expect any vet to attempt it even if anyone could afford what it
would cost. Would invovle removing the lense entirely, softening &
"refinishing" the inside, & re-attaching. I doubt anyone has ever done it
on a rat.

Quite a lot of rats, especially those with red eyes, are very
nearsighted, & use their other senses more than sight. And they get around
very nicely in pitch dark. He'll probably never be quite 100% blind, but
the world will become more shadows than objects. I wouldn't expect this to
negatively impact happiness with life, you'll just have to be careful to
make friendly noises before reaching in if he does go entirely blind, as
even a really nice rat can get so startled he might nip if he had no idea
he was about to be grabbed.

"Oh, sir! The flowers, they are wild," replied the timid creature.

i'd see a vet about it. they would be able to give you a better idea
of what's going on. one of my rats developed a cloudy dot in his eye
and it turned out to be a scratched cornea which required treatment
with antibiotic ointment.

Poor sweetie...
If in the end he does lose eye sight, he will be just fine. My mom has a
blind rat and he's the happiest out of the bunch. Let us know how he is
doing...
