Males can sometimes get a bit stinky, but most females don't really
need bathed. If you keep the cage clean, she shouldn't build up much
of an odor. Is there any particular reason your mom gave her a bath?
If she got into something messy, you might want to try just wiping it
off with a damp cloth, rather than trying to get Hope to cooperate
with a bath.

Unless your rat is a competition rat, don't bathe a female. It is
distressing for most rats (male and female alike) although their are a few
that like it! They are usually clean animals. If she does smell a bit you
can get a dry bath powder- can't remember where I saw it though (on the web
somewhere). but be careful as scents and chemicals can set off a bad
reaction in rats and you could be having a sneezer for weeks on end, as well
as sore skin!!! Try some cat litter in her cage as this neutralises odours!

Try gentle running water from a tap, lukewarm, rather than immersing the rat
in water, and make sure she has a nice warm dry place to dry off in or she c
ould catch cold. Females don't usually need bathing, though.

Is this the human shampoo? I always thought our shampoos were too strong
even to bathe dogs with. I know we did sometimes bathe our dog with baby
shampoos, but this isn't as harsh. But small animals, I thought, were
supposed to have specially formulated shampoos. Btw, I have tried the
shower-thing and you are right, it's more successful than the sink. I
didn't get quite as many cries as in the sink!

I only bathe my rats when absolutely necessary (eg. if they have lice and
the vet has given me a bathing solution to kill them, as happened earlier
this year). They hate it so much, and I really don't like seeing them in
such a distressed state. I have never found my male rats to smell in the
least - infact they smell lovely to me, their natural scent reminding me of
shower gel/shampoo. If they get something icky on their fur I just sponge
it off. In my opinion, they keep themselves clean enough, so if a bath can
be avoided I won't put them through it. Of course it's a different matter
if they like it!

Okay.. .well, she smelled AWFUL when we got her, and she still does. but i
dont know why it made her smell worse when we bathed her. i think my mom
used baby shampoo because it was all we had. But thanks... oh, and if you
know where u can get that powder stuff, like a store like petsmart maybe?

I use the shampoo for damaged hair. It's gentle. Baby shampoo is too mild.
Unfortunatly small animals were used to test the alergic reactions from our
human products.

Shampoo for damaged hair is not really mild, it's got all that added "gunk"
to make the split hair stick together. My hairdresser told me this and he
also said that baby shampoo is not necessarily mild either. Go figure... so
I use bunny shampoo on my rats. That is really mild stuff.

I don't give my bunnies a bath either...I was told to use bunny shampoo with
the rats as it is the mildest out there.
I just love my bunnies natural smell... so cuddly too!

I don't know if anybody mentioned this. But...it's not naturall to wash your
bunny or rat. (except if there is a reason).
It damages the skins natural protection. Your pet can get skin problems like
mites and scabs.
I know the shampoo is MEANT to wash pets...but me *personally* am against
it. I do have to admid I used it a few times as well before I fiund out and
thought about it.
