I gave all 20 a bath this weekend and whew what a chore. The moms were the
worst. By the time the babies figured out what was going on it was too late
to struggle. Anyway, just curious has anyone else had their rats purr, or
vibrate for lack of a better description? I had one rat that used to just
relax in my hand and vibrate in the water. She also used to wag her tail
when I petted her head...hmmm. Two of the babies started to purr. It was
so cute! J

I wish mine purred during bathtime. Murdock screams his head off like he's
being murdered but everyone else just makes faces.

Mine aswell - absolutely hate it. I have never had a rat yet that doesn't
hate baths. They cry and squeal like I am torturing them, so I only bathe
them when absolutely necessary. Yeah, those wet poops are slippery things!

Hi all,

I had to laugh at the descriptions of Bathtime..LOL. Is there any real
reason to bath Rats? ... I have never bathed any of these guys and I don't
think I have the confidence to do so anyway. Do you bath them because they
smell?... I see another learning curve ahead of me...LOL.

Regards Kate

Janine
Warning Kate...no eating
As far as poopy water I keep a Dixie cup nearby, scoop and toss in
toilet,continue to bathe!
I bathe my ratties because I have tremendously bad allergies and I suffer
if I don't bathe them. With a bath I only suffer half as much..oh well.
Also with 4 birds there are times when breathing is really tough.
Now that I have 20 rats it's not only a matter of allergies, they are a
little stinky!

Kate, I am in the mind now that because my rats hate bathing so much, I will
only do it when absolutely necessary. One such occasion was at the
beginning of this year when they had lice and the vet gave me a special
solution to bathe them with. I had to keep bathing them once a week for
several weeks - worked brilliantly and killed the lice but my rats fell out
with me big style - I was big, bad, meany mum for several hours afterwards!

I put all mine together in the shower then lather them up with Herbal
Essence shampoo. The poops go down the shower drain and they cuddle together
under the "rain". When they calm down I take them out and towel dry them one
at a time.

I don't think there is a real need to bathe rats. But for keeping allergies
at bay, I could see... In the beginning, when I first go my rats, only 4 at
the time.. I thought I had hurt them badly... I think I bathed them all of
two times and that was it. I bathe them now, only if they happen to sleep in
poop and them enjoying that new brown hair extensions... yikes!
