Rat sitting query - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page

I'm going off for a week in October and was wondering how I can go about
finding someone trustworthy to rat sit for me. I went off in August and had
someone come in to look after my girls, but when I got home, I wasn't happy.
The cage wasn't cleaned properly and my rats didn't seem too happy when I
got back. It's got me pretty worried about going off again :-(

Can anyone recommend somebody in West Yorkshire or give me a few pointers as
to how to find a rat lover who would be happy to do some sitting for me?

Do local vets keep a list maybe? How do you get on?

It's a real shame that the people I know just don't like rats and/or they're
frightened of them.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

I've had to leave (and couldn't wait to get back!) and the technicians at
the vets were the ones that looked after my girls. I figured who better.
It cost a bit but it was well worth it because I to came home and wasn't
happy. My girls didn't get their meds and my birds food and water was empty
probably not for long but not good enough! We also have an college nearby
that has what I guess would be called an animal husbandry dept.??? anyway
they have a whole campus devoted to that so you might try something like
that. Maybe one of the students could use extra money. Or a vet/vet tech
school. Good luck. j

Hi Janine

Thanks for the reply.

You must have been very upset when you got back :-( You'd have thought that
a vet would have done a much better job than that!
I hadn't thought about the college, it's worth a visit to see what it's
like and find out if they'd take them. Maybe I'm too fussy but I'd need to
check the place out first so I feel comfortable leaving them. I'd like them
to have a good holiday like me........... bed, breakfast and 5 course
evening meal, four poster, en-suite room with all comforts provided and
plenty of attention:o)

I'd have to check how often someone goes in to look after them too as it's
in the school holidays when we go away.

Good suggestion though, I'll look into it.

Oops, let me clarify that. I left them with the techs the next time I left
because previously they weren't taken care of well by others. Sometimes my
mind goes faster than my typing!
It's not picky either...I'm having trouble letting go of any of my 20
because who better will take care of them but me? (except any of you that
is!)
Maybe one of the students could take them home and not have to leave them at
the school. Sure you can't slowly introduce one of your friends into the
lovely world of ratties?
Keep us updated on who you find and good luck! j

No, it's probably me not taking my time to read your post properly. Sorry
about that, I get what you were saying now.

Although I have friends I have that live locally, sadly they aren't 'animal
people'. The only one I would trust to take care of them properly lives
miles away :-(
My Mum likes Phoebe and Amy but sadly she's afraid to put her hand in the
cage. She would have been perfect as she loves animals.

I'll keep trying. Keep your fingers crossed.

where abouts in West Yorkshire are you? Are there any local shelters that
would take them while you're away?

Hi Jen,

I live in Huddersfield. I don't think we have any local shelters around
here :-(

parsnip

Jen
good luck finding somewhere.

There is an RSPCA shelter in Huddersfield: Huddersfield & District
37 Trinity Street, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire

It might be worth contacting them to see if they would be willing to help??

If you don't have any luck I might be able to rat sit but you would have to
bring them here and it's quite a drive as I'm on the outskirts of Sheffield.

Hi Jen

I'm bowled over by your generous offer. So thoughtful of you :-)

If I get really stuck and if I could persuede my other half to drive the
distance then I'll give you a shout.

The RSPCA shelter is a thought. I could ring and see if they know of
anyone.

I found out that at the pet shop where we got Phoebe, they do animal
sitting. They charge £1.50 a day (£2 for 2 rats in the same cage) so I'm
putting some thought into it. I like the people who work there too. I'm
just not sure how much attention they'd get and they'd be alone over night
from the shop shutting. I know I can't have it all ways so I may end up
going for that option.

Thanks very much Jen

Hi Janine

I've got them booked in at the shop but I'm still not completely happy. I
know they won't get any special treatment and so I'm not 100% sure that I'll
be taking them there. It depends if I can find an alternative.

Hope you're not still working too hard!

I'll be going out of state for a few days at the end of the month.....My
husband and kids are remaining home.....even still...I dread the thought of
leaving the care of the rats to them. They ALWAYS forget. My younger son
was SUPPOSED to take care of the schools guinea pig this summer....I think
he fed him once. and never cleaned the cage. I did it all! I guess I'll
have to leave a "to do" list and hope someone will follow it!

I can imagine how you must feel. You'll no doubt be worrying from the
moment you leave and be relieved to get back.
In my experience, kids are full of good intentions.... 'Oh I *will* look

good with our girls though, but she's older now.

Hope everything goes ok for you.

You see, cleaning and taking care of the rats is "too much like work" for my
boys to do it. I'll probably have to pay big bucks to get them to at least
feed and water them! Since I'll only be gone for 4 days, that is probably
all they will even HAVE to do!
I wish I had a GIRL! I have 8 boy rats left....anyone want to trade a few
rats for a human girl????

This is too funny!!! Well, I must say, I'll keep my two human boys. They are
great but I do have to pay for it. Julien takes care of the cats, Mathieu
takes care of the dog and rabbits and both boys always help me when it's rat
cage cleaning day. They get a handsome allowance but they are worth it. By
the way, did I mention my boys also do the dusting, vacuuming, cleaning the
bathtub, dishes etc... I'm making sure I'm raising good husbands..LOL (I
should mention, this is not slavery... they have a choice in the matter,
just love money too much...lol)
Now, to teach one of them to cook... all my problems would be solved!!!

By the way, I think I'm catching your 'disease'.... I have a bad urge for a
couple of dumbo girlies but I'm not sure if Phoebe and Amy would approve of
getting pestered by 2 younguns :o)

particularly Slappa and Kat.

I don't know if I posted up the link to the page I did for my daughter to
show off our girls to her friends. Well it has pictures of Amy on it too
now. I think there was only our Phoebe there when I first posted the link.
I know you all like piccies so I hope you like these of our girls too.

lol

I can't even think about new babies for now. Last night I rescued a lovely
boy rat and I don't for the life of me know what the heck I'm going to do
with him but I couldn't leave him where he was. He needs a home with some
other boys. He's sitting here so quietly all alone but of course, I can't
put him in with my girls.

What the hell have I gone and done!!??

You get worse! lol.

Seriously though, I would appreciate any suggestions. I can't send him back
home again. He's been on his own for months now, his 'brother' (who was
kept in a different cage) was attacked and killed by the owners ferrets and
now the poor man is all alone. He's had little attention, he's quite
withdrawn as you'd expect. He was in his cage (which isn't really big
enough) with no food and shavings which were filthy, he hadn't been cleaned
out for weeks. Only the eldest son in a household of 4 picks him up now and
then but everyone else doesn't like him. He's about 18 months old as far as
I know. He is so quiet and gentle, you can feel he is nervous when you
cuddle him. I don't have room here for another cage and my girls are going
mad as they can smell him, especially Amy, she's a proper little tart lol.
She even tries it on with Phoebe all the time rofl. I've really put myself
in one very awkward position as my pathetic, over-emotional heart always
takes me over!!

Ok, seriously... could neutering him be an option? And then put him in with
the girls?
His situation is so heartbreaking, it's so good of you to take him in. Maybe
you could wrap him up and say "merry Christmas" to your eldest son?
lol...just kidding there. You could try asking around in other forums if
anyone needs an older guy to add to their older guys...
Good luck and keep us updated, by the way, what's the poor fella's name?
