Heyas,

I've had Smudge for about 18 months; 3 weeks ago, I brought her a little
sister (Splotch).

Splotch was sneezing almost constantly at first, though that's settled
down a lot in the past week.

But now Smudge is ill. She's got the following symptoms:

--(I'm guessing this from reading a few posts and a rat book) porphyrin
discharge (reddish/brownish crusty stuff)
--reduced appetite
--lethargic
--squeaky breathing (last night; now it's more of a click on exhale--and I
don't hear any bubbling deeper down)
--labored breathing

I've set up a separate cage so I can monitor her; with little money 'till
payday, I don't have much choice. She's got food (she's been eating a bit
more today than she did yesterday, when I first noted the symptoms) and
water of her own, her own bedding, and a small amount of Gatorade where she
can get to it (the rat book mentioned administering sugar water or
something similar in small doses to help her get up her energy). Every now
and then she'll get up a burst of energy and move to another spot in the
cage, but most of the time she just sits and looks pathetic :(

What's a typical cost for a vet visit and meds?

Is there anything I can do to make her more comfortable in the meantime?

Thanks,

--
J. W.

I'm afraid if you don't get her on medication soon, she will pass away. You
really should bring her to a vet immediately without delay. Maybe you can
tell the vet of your financial situation and he will help the rat out and
wait for payment.
There's not much you can do for comfort, she just can't breathe. My vet
charged us $50 to see the rat and the meds where $16.
Please, please bring the poor thing to the vet, if it's not too late...

i'd get her to the vet as quickly as you can. she sounds like she's
pretty sick, and they can go drastically downhill in a big hurry.

vet costs vary really drastically from place to place, depending on
where you are located and even just from vet to vet. some places will
only charge $15 for an office visit, other places $50.

you might try offering her some tempting foods- anything she'll eat.
my guys like fruit flavored babyfood when they're not feeling so good,
scrambled eggs, cooked pasta, oatmeal. whatever you have around the
house that's kind of bland.

i hope she feels better soon.

I was saddened to read this...:(

I am sure if you took your Rattie to the Vet he/she would be only too glad
to accommodate financial difficulties. Please take her to the vet.... I am
sure your Vet would let you pay off your bill etc...

Best wishes
Kate.

Oh my! These are the same symptoms that my Jackie had. I delayed
getting her to the vet and by then, no matter how hard we tried, she
was too far gone.
My vet typically charges about $60 for a visit and antibiotics.
Until you can get her to a vet, which should be as soon as humanly
possible,
make sure she gets calories and fluids into her. A small syringe will
come in handy. Baby formula, nutrition drinks (ensure, etc), anything.
Several times a day. Good luck!

Jen
sorry to hear she's so poorly :(

good luck with the vet - I'm sure they wouldn't turn you away if you
explained the situation. Let us know how she's doing.

Vet costs vary a lot depending on where you are in the world.

Here in Bicester near Oxford, England, our vet charges £8 consultation
fee and the meds (usually Baytril) costs about £2.50-3.00

Unfortunately, she died this morning on the way to the vet's. I had the
money ready and everything--but she was ready to go. The baby is doing
well, but she's mad at me for moving her out of the big cage and into a
freshly-scrubbed one. I spent the day cleaning it all out, getting rid of
anything that might be contagious, even though Smudge got it from her.

I took her to my favorite island (reachable by boat) this afternoon and
laid her to rest. I like the area--quiet, no people around.

I never had to deal with a rapid-onset illness like this before; Splotch
will be going to the vet's either way this Friday so I can at least know
she's safe.

Thanks for the pricing info; that sounds about like what the emergency
clinic was asking.

I'm so sorry for your loss... it sounds like she will be resting in such a
beautiful place and she will watch over her sister until she will be ready
to join her over the bridge.
It's good to have changed that bedding, pine and cedar is very bad for all
critters. I hope Splotch will be better. Are you planning on getting a new
buddy for Splotch. She will miss her sister terribly and she will benefit
from new companions.

I'm definately getting Splotch someone to pick on *g* She was so funny,
jumping all over Smudge, trying to get her to play. I can't imagine keeping
her alone.

That's very cheap compared to what I pay here in North Derbyshire. For
consultation it's £16.50 and for the tiniest amount of Baytril nearly £8.

So sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a ratty friend is never easy
whether it's sudden or expected.

But great that you're getting Splotch a new friend. Good luck with
introducing them!
