Just to let any of you guys reading this, just returned from the Vet's and
Poppet has an infection in her airsacs. We have been very lucky in finding
an Avian Vet at such short notice and a Vet who I honestly believe and trust
in. Anyway, after some antibiotic injections and a crop feed of a
vitamin/mineral/glucose supplement, he reckons she has a 50/50 chance of
pulling through, he recommended she come home as it's her known environment
and if she makes it through the night she'll be back for some more
injections tomorrow.
Anyway, my main reason for this post is to just let you guys know .... if
you're Lovie is sick, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE find an Avian Vet to take her/him
to. Don't use a NON Avian Vet unless it is you're only and last resort. I am
NOT saying that any vet is bad, but Avian Vet's really DO know what they're
talking about. I just hope that Poppet makes it through the night.....

What's your definition of an Avian vet?
A) Vet can tell the difference between a snake and a bird.
B) Vet has clipped the wings of a few budgies.
C) Vet is willing to treat birds.
D) Vet has paid membership dues to the Association of Avian
Veterinarians. (Any vet can do this).
E) Vet is certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners as
an Avian Practice Specialist.

Hi Jack
Unfortunately we don't have such easy access to Avian Vets in the UK as you
do in the US, so finding a Vet who has ANY experience of handling birds and
being willing to treat them is a rarity, nevermind one who has actually
studied avian practices. I can't actually see much point in him being
certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners as an Avian
Practice Specialist if he practices in the UK, I get your point though. The
Avianist I found was fortunately recommended by a friend of a friend (they
both keep/fly/rescue birds of prey) I never actually thought of phoning my
friend (the penny didn't drop) until I had exhausted all other means of
finding someone, where I am it's easy to find a Vet if you have
Cattle/Horses etc. but not as easy for Avianists.
Hopefully anyone in the US will take note of your very sensible reply and
plump for option I, should the need arise. I just want our little bird to
pull through, hopefully we've caught it in time....

Jack,
I belive that Ian has said in the past that he lives in the UK, so a vet
who is certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners would
quite probably be very hard IF not impossible to find. . .
