Hi All:
My wife asked me to post this question. We have a two year old budgie,
very tame and the family is very attached to this pet. Needless to
say, we are very careful regarding his health.
My wife is thinking about getting a hair permanent. I seem to recall,
that the odor from the chemicals used for the perm usually linger for
quite some time even after the harir is washed several times.
Is this a problem for budgies? The bird frequently sits on my wife's
shoulder and sometimes pecks at her hair.
This may all seem like a silly question /topic, but I know that these
birds are extemely sensitive to smell.

FWIW... I used to get perms all the time and it never bothered my birds.

A home perm? Or a Salon perm???
I don't think I'd risk a home one... What do you think?

I'm talking about salon perms. I'd never risk a home perm with birds in the
house either.
Salon perms have come a long way. The one's they have today aren't as
"stinky" as they used to be. Any residual odor left on the hair would, IMO,
be so slight that it wouldn't cause a problem.

Others have answered the odor question. But! If your wife comes home
looking like she's wearing an oversized brillopad, the budgie might not
recognize her and make a beeline to the opposite end of the house.

I have to wash my hair four-to-eight hours after a perm, most people have to
wait three days... If she wants a perm, suggest she has it done at a salon
and doesn't have the bird on her shoulder until after her first wash.
