Kiwi - Orange Bellied African Senegal - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Louis C. Candell
Hi,

I've been a lurker in the newsgroups, but I finally decided to pop in
and say hi as I have a new addition to my family - Kiwi. (African
Orange Bellied Senegal)

I have tried joining alt.pets.parrots.african-senegal, but my ISP
(earthlink.net) does not carry it at this moment, so I'm waiting for
a free newsgroup provider to approve my account. I've decided to have
Kiwi on a semi-streaming webcam server, as I start school next week
and want to keep an eye on him while @ school, so I created the
following (which I hope you enjoy!):

* http://www.ossh.com/african-senegal/

The image updates every 60 seconds, so feel free and check out my
precious Kiwi as he should be up for the next few hours. The URL up
above should stream Kiwi 24/7 once everything is set up in the living
room, as I have to find a way to get the web cam to focus from the
location of my server, but I hope you people enjoy my Kiwi as he
streams into your browser :)

He is so precious so I hope you enjoy watching him as much as I
do. Could anyone using earthlink.net please email the following:

* NewsSupport@earthlink.net

And please request:

* alt.pets.parrots.senegal-parrot

As I require more than just one request for addition of the newsgroup,
so any help would be appreciated!

Enjoy!

There's no such group as alt.pets.parrots.african-senegal. If there was,
Google would carry it for sure, and they don't cuz I just checked.

If you're not convinced, look up the earthlink groups for posting requests
such as adding a newsgroup. Probably earthlink.support.usenet would be the
best one.

Congrats on your new bird.

Atl.pets.parrots.african-senegal does in fact exist. Google doesn't
carry:

-groups that don't have a certain level of traffic (such as the
senegal group)
-brand new groups

Cheers!

Aww, thanks!

I just moved him back into my room, so the stream is off for today as
the sun is going down, but he should be back up every day from
7am-7pm PST. The pictures show UTC time (London - GMT).

He is a great companion, but I'm having a hard time getting him to eat
anything *other* than Harrisons Bird Food - Adult Lifetime Fine. He's
the Senegal which was advertised in the other newsgroup marketplace,
which required a home in Southern California. I took a gamble and I
couldn't be happier! Kiwi is a bird lovers dream come true. :)

Scott, which is his prior owner, let me have Kiwi without any request
for money, and this bird is wow... has not bit me once. He is lovable
and cries when I leave the room, so I'm kind of in need of adjusting
with this bird. My prior pet of 20 years just passed away, so I
started getting into birds a few months ago, and this is my first
major parrot. Mind you my other pet was a Whippet, but I did have him
for 20 years, so the care I provided him was in need to go into
another pet, and Kiwi is now this pet who will get my love and
attention.

As stated before, the only problem I'm having is getting him to eat
anything *other* than Harrisons food. I have been placing three
containers of goodies in his cage, and he ignores everything *but*
the pellets, so I'm kind of scratching my head over here. He refuses
to eat unless I put the pellets in my hand and feed him that way,
otherwise, he cries and cries until I feed by hand. It's rather
precious, but now I understand what he meant by not having enough
time to put into the bird, because this little cutie is a handful!

This is by far the tamest bird I've encountered yet. I've passed out
with him on my chest only to wake up to him licking my lips, or
nibbling @ my ear, heh. Scott took *excellent* care of this bird. He
handed me over $500+ worth of vet bills / checkups, and the bird is
even chipped, and he asked me for $0, so I'm trying to take as much
care of this bird as possible, as Scott seriously made my next 20
years with such a gift.

Heh, I was rather intimidated of that beak of his when I first brought
him home, so the day after I put his smaller cage on my bed and just
opened the cage door. He @ once walked out and climbed up the cage and
just watched me for a good 2-4 hours. I grew rather tired of just
sitting there so I tried to lay down, and he climbed down and used my
knees as steps and climbed up onto my legs! That was it... he became
mine @ that moment, and that was not even 12 hours after picking him
up from Corona, CA!

Anyways, thanks for reading as the last two weeks have been bliss,
and I've kind of bored everyone around me with my bird talk. Anyone
have suggestions *other* than starving him until he eats what I want
him to eat to kind of wean him off these pellets, as I would like him
to eat fruits, vegetables and seeds. He even ignored spray millet
and an assortment of seeds! He does, however, have this thing of
picking @ my nail cuticle, so I guess there is hope eh?

Also, do any of you give your birds fruit juices (Cranberry Juice,
Apple Juice, Orange Juice, etc. ?) as he started licking my fingers
after I spilled cranberry juice on my fingers, and I kind of want him
to eat something other than those pellets and I think CB juice might
be a start.

Thanks,

Just curious, but how do you plan on leaving him when you go to school
if he cries when you're out of sight and won't eat unless you
hand-feed his pellets?? Do you have neighbors that will mind
listening to a screeching bird all day? I foresee problems unless
you start "weaning" him from your -constant- attention (I am NOT
saying you should ignore him) and start allowing him to eat from a
seed cup, and not just your hand. He sounds like a sweetie, but he's
going to be very stressed unless you gradually get him used to you
being gone before school actually starts.
Good luck with your new companion!

I agree. Years ago, a friend/parrot-mentor of mine told me to never give a new
bird much more attention at first than you'd give it after a year or two. I
broke that rule with my first Poicephalus, a male Red-Bellied, and he developed
some behavioral problems that we needed to work through.

Paradoxically, however, it'd probably be a good idea to work MORE with Kiwi
short-term to introduce other foods besides Harrison's pellets to him/her.
Since parrots are social eaters, let Kiwi watch you eating healthy people food,
and then offer to share.

If you don't yet have it, Mattie Sue Athan's "Guide to the Senegal Parrot" is a
good resource.

Good luck.
