Seattle Bruce is a 97 model purple and white American budgie. That
was a good year for budgies but poor Bruce has seen better days. His
parents dropped off Bruce with my neighbor about a week ago and went
back to China for no less than two years. I think their idea was to
give away Bruce. The story goes like this: his cage mate died some
time before. The owners left Bruce and since we have several birds my
neighbor asked me to take a look.
Well, gosh darn it, but Bruce in his nice but real dirty cage, crowded
with stuff is about as sick as I've ever seen one of the little guys.
Puffed up, sleeping all the time. Having breathing problems,
clicking, and the poor little guy whines every time he moves and even
whines (oh, oh, oh) when he eats. His tail flicks. :( Awe, but he
came over and gave me kisses on my finger. What did he have to go and
do that for?
Ok. So I told my neighbor, "Man, he's having health problems." My
neighbor said, "look I'm going out of town can you watch him for a
while?" I was worried about Bruce getting my birds sick but I took
him anyway and am keeping him separated.
The first thing I did was to remove the jungle of junk from the cage
and give it a thorough cleaning. I put a mineral block in there, some
greens, clean food and water and am keeping Bruce half covered. He
seems to be improving but his progress is really slow. I'm afraid it
might be more than just the common cold so I'm trying to get some
street help for Bruce. You see, Bruce is a street budgie. What can a
Seattle street budgie like Bruce do when he gets sick like this?
Thanks,
SD

You--or the person who owns Bruce--takes him to an avian vet ASAP for
treatment, as you would for any companion animal.

Haven't you taken it to the vets? It would be the very first think I'd do.

Sounds to me like you are doing the right thing. Alot of love and time and
of course a vet visit, to a good avian vet, is a necessity, as you would
already know. I can understand wanting to get information on here as most
vet visits are 100 or more and if you can get any information before going
to the vet that might help, would be all the better.
Did he/she improve after cleaning up the cage?

Could be. The only way to tell for sure is to see an expert. The
network reaches a vast audience with considerable talent, but that
can never replace the expert observation and diagnosis of a
trained professional. Do yourself or your pet a big favor -- if
there is a problem, go see an appropriate practitioner. If there

Thanks kindly but Bruce has no money. This is a plea for any
information I might use to get some help for Bruce. Are there any
"home remedies", free clinics or sympathetic vets in the Seattle area?
I suspect the answer is no to all my questions but there is no harm
in trying. You can send me e-mail if you don't want to go public.
I described the problem to one vet and she said if it's an infection
it's either viral in which case you can't do anything or not-viral in
which case you could give him an antibiotic. If I knew what to do I
might ask a pharmacist to prepare something for him. Just a
thought... What antibiotics do they give birds? Erythromyacin? Oh
well, if you're a vet or anyone in Seattle, WA area who can lend a
hand or help with information I'd be very grateful.
Thanks,
SD

You can go to a pet store and buy some antibiotics for the water.
Ornacyn-Plus is a broad spectrum antibitotic (erythromycin) with
vitamins and amino acids. Its package says it's for treatment of
respiratory diseases and also corrects diarrhea and vitamin
deficiencies. Petco carries it. Around $5.00. Good luck.

Look, if the bird is that ill don't mess about. It may have psittacosis or
any number of infections. It's cruel to leave him suffering while you try
to self diagnose him, take him to a bloody avian vet, borrow money if you
have to. You can't guess what he has and you should put yourself in his
position. He's not happy, feeling poorly and is hoping _you_ will help him
and take him to someone who can make him better. I don't know why you're
asking here when you should be pulling out all the stops to get him seen by
a professional as soon as possible!?

What a crap country it must be where you can diagnose and buy treatment for
a birds ailments without having to go to the 'bother' of having it seen by
a vet!

I'm so sorry you do not have access to over-the-counter medicines where you
live. In the USA we are able to treat ourselves, our children and out pets
with products sold and labeled for a variety of ailments. These OTC
products range from herbal to those which may have required a prescription
at one time but are now available without one. Even herbal remedies must be
used cautiously, but are still available.
In our farm and pet stores, many preventative and curative products are
available to those who care for animals.
Of course, we also have the availability of products which are only sold to
those who can present a prescription written by their health professional.
It sounds as though you only have these available to you.

He has improved some but is still quite puffy, sleepy etc. He's still
confined to sick-bay. His tail doesn't flick quite as bad as it did
but it still flicks. His tail also likes to take a "between his legs
attitude" if you know what I mean. It's not normal as I've got a
couple of rip roaring American budgies to compare him to. Bruce is a
little bit better now which gives me some hope. Wish there was more I
could do for him...
Thanks,
SD

In live in the UK and what we definitely don't do is antibiotic use without
an appropriate prescription. I think this is a very wise decision since
antibiotics should only ever be used when needed and not as a general cure
all. Over use of antibiotics means that when you really need them to work
you will find that you have built up a tolerance.
I thought it was most unwise for people to advocate this guy going out and
buying a (quite possibly inappropriate) antibiotic to see if it might work.
Vets train for years to be able to diagnose our pets, that's what they're
there for.

Bruce has no money? Or Bruce has no money for just a bird? When Bruce took
that bird in, he also made the commitment to give that bird the best care
possible. If that's not the case, then Bruce should never have gotten the
bird in the first place and has no business owning *any* pets.

Know the feeling well of late. I have great timing, I've lost my temping
contract just when all the vets bills came in. Still, I'd give my last
penny to help my birdies (as may well be proved!)

Silly Tony. Of course he owns birds, he has made a website to tell ppl what
kind of birds he owns. I have met him and he does indeed own birds.

It's really sad :( I wish they didn't sell stuff like that, then perhaps
people would hurry to the vets faster. I think sometimes people see
budgies and small animals as disposable pets, thinking they get sick and
they either make it or they don't. Like my own budgie, my first vets would
have been happy to put him to sleep through ignorance of his affliction.
It's really very sad to think of all the needless suffering and upset
caused by improper care.

Over use and wrongly prescribed antibiotics are causing more and more
resistance. They wont last us forever if they are overused, eventually
bacteria wont react to the treatment, and small animals fed antibiotics
that are inappropriate (by foolish owners) will no longer be able to
receive those antibiotics as an effective treatment for perhaps a life
threatening illness later on in life. Also more antibiotic resistant
strains of disease will emerge.

Thanks man, I'm on my way. Albeit slow, I can see that Bruce is
recovering and he really seems improved the last couple of days. I'm
hopeful that it's nothing more than a respiratory infection and he
will have a full recovery.
SD
BTW: I really appreciate everyone's concern for Bruce; many thanks! I
know Bruce is going to make it and I'll see to it he gets to a vet as
soon as he possibly can. In a few days I'll talk to his owner and one
of us will take him. Bruce came here because this is the best
possible place he could go. We're already very fond of him. We're
going to take good care of him. :)

You really are a bitter, antagonistic person who has no patience with
anyone's ideas of opinion - if they differ from yours. It's no wonder
you leave more groups after alienating anyone else who participates
against your point of view.
If you do disagree, why not try to be less holier than thou, and more
constructive, or are you just a tactless ****wad?

There was no opinion to disagree with, just a cheap shot by an even cheaper

LOL nice one. Didn't see the reply since the tactless ****tard is now kill
filed (obviously he didn't expect me to do that). I see that despite my
providing evidence of the over use of antibiotics in America, he still

I think people like that ruin nice newsgroups. Generally, despite the
occasional flurry of argument posts, I enjoy reading this newsgroup. It's
very informative and entertaining.

Don't panic, Magic responded well to his Doxycyclin (the drug of choice).
He was so ill that when he went to our new avian vet, he said he was
septicemic. He was quiet, fluffed up and due to his enlarged liver he was
having to lean forward to breathe. I tried not to be too hopeful and
accepted the fact that as his symptoms were quite bad it may be too hard
for him to pull through. The vet was lovely and said that he was obviously
a fighter. He was so itchy from the toxins his live had put out that he
scratched a sore into the front of his head on the perches. His symptoms
passed within 2 weeks, a week after that he rubbed his head to remove the
scab where his sore had healed. He is now nearing the end of his treatment
and you wouldn't believe the difference in him. I think he's rediscovered
life.
He also has a friend again, a young male called Charlie, who now lives in
his cage, (since Magic is not shedding active virus anymore) and who he
likes to preen, kiss and perch with (erm, is this normal for males to
regurgitate for each other or is my budgie bi!?). I couldn't be happier
for him. I really feel having another bird was the best thing for him, he
was very obviously lonely after the death of Houdini.
Charlie is nuts, he keeps making police siren noises and most un budgie
like parrot calls :) His favourite thing is waling upside down, hanging
from the ceiling.
You can see him (and Magic...and little Houdini) here

I don't care how outspoken this is, you are stupid and irresponsible, and
do not deserve animals if you are not willing to take this one to the vet

Man, the **** I gotta hear to try and help out somebody else's sick
bird! Your reading comprehension skills are about as good as your
goat-manners bex.
I'm broke and I took twenty dollars out of my food money to buy
Bruce's medicine etc., and he doesn't even belong to me. Gee, do I
have to say I didn't have to get involved here. It would have been so
much easier to just say to my friend, "nice bird" and "bye." Hmm...
maybe bex is right and I am stupid?
Bruce is looking a little better each day. I'll try to wade through
all the personal attacks to post some updates.

It's admirable that you took him in, of course, but perhaps if you knew you
hadn't the money to get him vet treated you should have thought of that
first. I'm only thinking of the poor bird and though your intentions are
great I think you're letting him down a bit.
You have no way of knowing if your guessing his illness correctly. You
mentioned if I recall, that you had other budgies. How are you planning to
treat them in the event that *they* get sick? Perhaps it would be prudent
in future to put a little aside for vets bills. You don't just buy them
then that's it, do you? You expect to have to pay vets bills now and again.
If you've taken on the responsibility of healing someone elses sick animal,
you *still* have a duty to that animal, even though it's not yours, to do
the best you possibly can for it, and that means the vets, at what ever
cost. I would beg and borrow to help a sick animal in my care. Perhaps
it's just me. I know when my bird was sick I felt I must do absolutely
anything to give him the best chance possible, I don't think I could have
lived with myself if I had left something untried and he had died. As it
happened he had psittacosis and would certainly have died without one
specific drug prescribed by my vet. What if this little fella has the
same, don't you think it would be awful?
Are there no places to take pets in your state for those who can't afford
the bills? Surely there just be others who can't, they must go somewhere.
I'm not having a go, I'm just having a hard time understanding how someone
can take a sick animal, and then say they are too poor to care for it
properly. Perhaps they charge more for vet care where you live. It's
about £10 to see a vet here, maybe £25 with treatment. I'm not well off,
but I save towards possible vets bills because I would't want to put an
animal on second best treatment and possibly have it die anyway.
I sincerely hope the budgie gets better...but if you happen to come into
any money (borrow, credit card, bank loan, overdraft?) I still think the
vets would be a good plan.

Forget Bex, SD, she's a judgemental, anti-American fruitcake. You're doing
what ya can, and that's that. Do have a PayPal account? If you do, I'll send
you some cash for the Bruce Recovery Fund. Maybe Bex will put her money
where her mouth is and do the same ( I doubt it though, see appears to be
all blow and no go).

I'm happy that you took my advice. When seeing a vet isn't an option,
these over the counter medicines help greatly. Why anyone would see help
as a bad thing, I'll never know. I admire you for caring as much as you
have about someone else's bird.
I look forward to hearing about Bruce's progress. I've used these
products on my budgies in the past with good success.

Cute birds! Thanks for the reassurance Bex. MacDaddy is back to his
screeching, chortling, hanging upside-down self lately. I hope to get the
results back today and am hoping against hope that it's negative. After
another week of Flagyl injections for everyone, I'm hoping not to have to
put the tiels through any more.

I think you should do more research before giving advice like this Ravl.
Those OTC antibiotics are not strong enough to make any kind of a difference
what so ever. And a budgie doesn't drink enough of the water to get any
kind of result from it. More than likely, your bird wasn't all that sick if
you think the store bought stuff helped.

The bottom line is that Bruce is a homeless street budgie that comes
with a minimum $100-$200 price tag. The price might even be higher?
No one in their right mind will even consider it; I have asked. The
avian vets I have talked to offer no services without payment in full,
whatever the cost. There are no veterinary no-to-low-cost
alternatives for "pocket pets" in my area.
I'm all Bruce has got right now and he's pretty lucky I think. Two of
my other American budgies are also street birds like Bruce: escaped
re-captures and guess what? I got them free from an avian vet. I
don't think she would have given them to me if she thought they would
be at risk.

SD:
Why don't you ask the avian vet who
gave you the two other street budgies if she could take cut you a break with an
exam and the meds? You helped her taking two unwanted birds off her hands.

I'm not sure what you are saying in this statement. Please don't discount
the possibility of Bruce infecting your other birds. They certainly are as
much "at risk" as any other bird would be. Isolate Bruce and be
conscientious of cross-contamination.

Oh, I don't mind. She's concerned and I appreciate that. I simply
don't have the money and his owner is asking me for money. I thought
there was some chance that a Seattle area vet or vet-connected person
might read this post and offer some assistance. BTW: my e-mail works
if you don't want to go usenet.
Yours is the first offer of monitary assistance I have received.
Perhaps a vet would accept a direct deposit or something? I'll call
around and investigate the possibility. Bruce is taking his
antibiotics now and looking a little better each day but he's still
got a long way to go.
Thanks,
SD

Your UKL10 vet visit and UKL25 treatment translate into roughly US$16, =
and US$40. I cannot visit a vet for that, how many people can? anyone?
I think Bruce is lucky to have someone trying to help.
