Does anyone know why some budgie's eyes don't develop an iris or at least
not one that is visible? I've posted here before about my female budgie
Felix when she was still alive. She was 3 1/2 when she died and she never
developed an iris. Her eyes were solid black. I always thought it was
unique, but I was looking around on the web today and saw quite a few
pictures of adult budgies that have solid black eyes.

I have two budgies, one has the solid eyes, one has eyes with yellow all
around. The one with yellow definitely seems to flash the edges to express
mood, notably anxiety.

I believe that's called pinning. When budgies go into that saucy mode,
either with the mirror, or each other, their eyes definitely take a
serious turn. The pupil gets smaller, the white larger, and the eye
looks *very* intense.

The recessive pied budgies don't develop the iris ring.
Sometimes a budgie can just be split for recessive pied
and not develop the iris ring! Seems strange since this
is supposed to be a recessive gene, but I learned that on
an exhibition budgie list. So even a budgie of a normal
color might not develop the iris if it is split for rec.
pied. I've had some budgies like that.
