My truly amazing budgie, Nur, was diagnosed about a year ago with a
kind of "irritable bowel syndrome"....that the vet told me would come
and go.....and prescribed some herbal remedies....
......but he took a very sudden downward turn a week ago.....losing his
appetite completely (food and water).....and molting heavily.....the
vet rechecked his xrays and did fecal cultures and decided, as you
most likely have already guessed....that he has fatty liver
disease....
.....so now he is off his food and water....they prescribed milk
thistle (liquid, 2 drops a day), supplemental hand feeding and
hydration....which i chose over hospitalizing him....he's looking
about the same....pretty crummy and certainly hates all the hand held
attention.....
.....i know this is an old story to alot of you in this group, but i
need to ask for my sweet and sassy friend and my heart broken
self....is there anything new in treatment?.....is there a risk that
the milk thistle could make him worse at this point?.....any advice is
welcome, here, or at my email...
...thanks so much...

Sorry about your budgie's problems, kj. I'm not a vet, but
I haven't heard that milk thistle could harm a bird at all
as long as it is given as directed. I used to know a person
who treated her birds with fatty liver disease with milk
thistle combined in either dandelion or chickweed tea which
are also cleansing for the liver. I hope he recovers.

| Owly |
At this point, if anything can help her it is probably milk thistle
(although I'd probably take it a step further and go with aloe detox). It
won't hurt her, even in higher doses it's hard to do them harm unless they
aspirate it.
I'm sorry you're having to deal with this, it's very difficult and
frustrating, I know :(.

Can you use human supplements for the milk thistle...the sort in liquid
form? If so how much of it?

liver biopsy if it continues.....
....so we hope..
as for the milk thistle, it is relatively new in liquid form and the
brand I was given is definitely for humans.....i think the low alcohol
content is especially important for birds...the brand name is Gaia
herbs in Brevard, North Carolina.....
....i don't know if there is any difference among brands, but this is
easier as it is liquid.....
