Bart's and Victoria's personalities are really coming out now. They are
doing things they never did before and relating to *me* like a friend,
instead of just "the big one".
A few days ago, Victoria actually licked my ear and nose. That is so
sweet! The day after, she stuck her nose in my ear and just SNIIIIFFED.
She's never done that before.
But, she sure has learned to love having her back and sides scratched!
She humps her back up and pushes against my hand when I do it on her
shoulder blades. Then, when I scratch her sides, she just falls over and
lays there licking me.
Bart has started playing this game where, as I thump my hands on the
floor saying, "I'm gonna gitcha!", he runs around the room behind all
the furniture, popping out every hole, then running backwards into it
again, only to pop out somewhere else. They can run almost as fast
backwards as they can forwards!
He has gotten real good at not biting. No more *lick lick chomp*. He
only licks now, and I can see when he is tempted to *chomp*, he draws
away and just licks his lips instead. So, he IS trying, and I am very
pleased with him.
The only exception is when he goes up my pants leg; he sometimes still
nips. But, when I am laying on the couch in shorts, he doesn't nip my
legs. But, if I put the cover over me, he will then nip also. There's
something to do with them being covered that makes him want to nip.
He will also nip when I am "playing hands" with him, and giving him
little pinches, but that's okay and understandable. That's how they
play, and he loves it. Yet, I can pick him up a minute later, and he's
lost interest in nipping. It's like he clearly knows the difference
between the two.
Now, I can lay him on his back im my arm and scratch the side of his
head and ears (for about 30 seconds). He's starting to actually sit
still some when I pick him up and hold him. I still don't quite trust
him near my mouth or nose (don't want to reenact the Verizon
commercial!), but he's been close before without nipping.
Victoria has gotten so good at stopping *whatever* when I say "No"
(usually chewing on my sub-woofer grill cloth). Actually, there's
nothing else wrong that she does, come to think of it. She's just a
perfect little lady.
Bart knows "No" very well (he ought to - he hears it about 30 times a
night!), but he doesn't respond to it unless I say it loudly, firmly and
in a certain tone. Otherwise, he just pauses a second, then keeps on
doing *whatever* I told him not to. He gets this look as if to say, "Is
he talking to *me*? Nawww", then he continues with his misadventure,
which is usually getting up on the chair to my desk, then over the
counter into the kitchen. I'm learning to push my chair away from the
desk if I go into the kitchen. He seems to think it's fun - to see if he
can make it before I can catch him.
Right now, having gutted my day pack, they are merrily exploring a new
coat I threw on the floor for them. They also like the hat I got, and
they look so funny when I put it over them, as my hat begins to walk
around the room. *LOL* For some reason, it reminds me of an episode of
The Three Stooges (where a bird is under a skull, walking around and
freaking them out!).
Ooop! OMG, I forgot about the roll of string I had in my pack! They have
unrolled about 20 feet of it, tied a complex knot in it, and dragged it
behind the couch all the way to the other end!
Last week, I forgot and left a coffee can FULL of the paper litter I
make for them on the floor when I let them out to play. Big mistake! It
took them about 30 seconds to spread it out about 5 feet, before I
realized it was down there! They always have been interested in that
coffee can, and I meant to get it up before I let them out. I'm smarter
now! *hehe*
Lectris (the cat) is also relating to them better. Yesterday, Bart
walked right between her hind legs and she didn't mind. She is even
trying to play with him some; as he was walking away, she playfully
swatted at his butt. But, they both still respect her and don't crowd
her much. OTOH, they sense she is relaxed and don't really fear her,
either. They get quite close to each other sometimes with no problem.
(Troni still freaks out and leaves when I announce, "It's time for the
ferrets to come out").
Anyway, that's about it. They are becoming real characters. It's only
taken a little over a year for them to progress this far. It's probably
from being neglected by their previous owner and never interacted with.
They were novelties to him, not personalities. They are family to us
now. :o)

Sounds like they are really developing personalities, Gary. It all goes
back to what I've always said about ferts.............you get out exactly
what you put into them. More time, love, play and communication into them
and more love, play and communication they give back.....even tho each does
it in his/her own way because of their individual personalities. I've
been sooo surprised at the level of understanding and communication Kylie
and I enjoy. She understands and responds to much more than I ever thought
possible. Sounds like Bart and Victoria are on their way growing and
changing because of all the love and attention they receive. Please give
'em hugs from Kylie and me!

Apparently so, but nothing beats Kylie's running and jumping into *your* hands!
I would just about pay to see that! :o)
I think she relate to you the way she does because you have much more time to
dedicate to her alone (and a ferret proofed house). I can't do that, so,
naturally, mine aren't as advanced (and probably never will be).
I have always found that if you relate TO animals, instead of *at* them, as if
they understand, it seems to cause them to understand. I'll never forget Lucky
(cat) bringing a big roach in, playing with it till it died, then telling him,
"It's broken - you gotta go get a new one", then watching him trot back out,
only to return in a few minutes with a new one! He seemed to understand exactly
what I said!

Absolutely I think it's because of the time spent directly one on one with
her. Not everyone has that option and I'm grateful for the opportunity -
and it does provide a unique situation to see what the possibilities really
are. I do think every little bit counts tho and encourage everyone to
spend at much time 'communicating' with their fuzzies as possible. The
purpose of my posts isn't to brag about Kylie's escapades, but to let people
know the possibilities when that time is spent. The results are amazing, as
you can already see! :-)
