Had two ferrets, one died. Now the other has started to put on weight, a lot
of weight. I cut back the food of course but he continues to gain. Any
ideas.

Do you know why the other one died? Are they related? Are they on Prednisolone?
Any coughing? How old? What are you feeding? Need more information.

Please don't cut back the food. If your ferret is gaining weight because he
is sick, cutting back his food won't do anything other than make a hungry
sick ferret. If he is not sick, perhaps just a little more exercise,
attention and playtime is called for.....but please don't cut back his food.

Sounds unrelated to me. Ferrets 'pork up' in the Fall, getting ready for
winter. my two boys will gain over a pound and get really plump. In the
Spring, they return to their normal skinny selves.

Interesting. Bart has put on weight and is almost the size of Victoria now. I
wonder if that's it. But, I don't recall him bulking up last year at this time.
Maybe it was because I didn't have them very long at the time. He's put on so much
weight that I was starting to wonder if something is wrong; but, he plays (he was
a total nut last night!) and eats and poops normal. I felt around and didn't feel
anything unusual.

All of mine gain weight each fall/winter. We keep the ferret toom arounnd
50 F, mostly for us poor mortals that need to check on them each day and let
them out to play.

I was just informed that they can take pretty cold temps as long as it doesn't
get down to freezing. It's good to see Bart putting on weight, but I still
wonder why he didn't last winter?

Most of the bulking up in autumn and winter is fur and fat depending on your
climate.

Remember fat ****e lastb year, he was a hell of a size and will be again this
year.

We are also in rabbit season again and the fats and richness from the rabbit
really pile on the pounds.

Don`t worry as long as your not bulking them up with crap food such as sweet
stuff.

A beaten egg mixed with a drab of milk once a week is also a good treat and
gives them extra energy and fats needed for winter.

If you really wanna see them get mucky, just crack them a hens egg and let them
try get at the goodies themselves, its good to watch.
