jumpingmouse & kylie
I called Wylie's mommy a few minutes ago and told her that it's just not
working out with Kylie and Wylie. (That was our agreement beforehand that if
it didn't work it, he would go back home) Wylie is a great little guy and
he deserves a good playmate (his cagemate just died a few weeks ago). His
mommy and daddy were so emotionally shattered from the death of his cagemate
that they decided it would be easier to find another home for Wylie than to
get another playmate for him.

Well........when I called them tonight, they were absolutely ecstatic that
their little boy is coming home tomorrow and had already decided they had
made a mistake and should have just kept Wylie and let him pick himself
another playmate. Soooooo.........I guess this is going to work out best
for everyone. I'm just exhausted after listening to them battle off and on
all afternoon and it just shatters my nerves hoping one of them isn't
getting hurt. I suppose if I were tougher I could just let them work it out
and eventually they would come to some kind of understanding. I prefer to
just go back to the way we were - heck being Kylie's whole world can't be
all bad I guess. I just thought she might like some ferret company and
obviously I was very wrong. She can go back to being the princess and ruler
of her domain.

p.s. Chuck is NEVER going to let me hear the end of this. He may be right,
but I'm the mom ;-)

It has taken Spazz a week at least to get along with his new cagemates.
First Lilly and Cindi, then Bilbo, and Scoots. It was rough but always worth
it when it was over.

Sounds like they're thrilled.I still think Kylie can find a friend. These two
took 6 months to become friends.Honey wanted to beat Sugar up.There was even
fear poops, but finally they became buddies.

No, I'm not calling you crazy :-) This decision makes everyone happy.
Only don't think there's no possibility of getting Kylie a friend. When I
bought an 8 week old female for Emmy she finally accepted another ferret.
Last week I took in a male rescue, and Emmy even accepted that one, probably
because she's used to play with Rose now.

It can be, uh, "distracting." Yeah, that's a nice expression for it.

We're working on integrating a new one into our group. She's made nice with
Minya, after some minor scuffles (they even went to the vet yesterday in the
same carrier). And Quasimodo doesn't seem to care WHO'S around, so long as
he gets plenty to eat and they like to wrestle. Razzle is proving to be a
problem. She and the new one seem to have worked out their issues if they're
out playing, and will even play with each other outside the cage, but in the
smaller space of the cage I guess there's some territorial issues to be
settled.

I'm going to try cleaning the big cage while they're out playing this
weekend then "seed" it with some things (bedding, hammock, etc.) from
Marie's cage to see if it helps everyone feel more comfortable and less
possessive of the space.

It helped when we put Razzle and Minya together a couple of years back,
hopefully it'll work out here as well.

If not, well, I can see that they will work it out. It's not all out battle
(tails get bottle-brushed, and there's some hissing and squeaking, but no
blood and no flying poop). The fights are already getting shorter and they
go their own ways now rather than standing in opposite corners watch each
other. Still, I'm not comfortable with putting Marie in with the others
full time yet.

I may just have to let them do it their way, with my interference to prevent
actual injury. But, as you say, it's hard to watch them go at it.

While I can understand the previous owner's despair and feeling of loss not
having Wylie around, as others have said, it can sometimes take a month or so
for a new ferret to be accepted. It won't happen over night. Did you give it
enough time?

You need to do what is best for your ferret.

I've had intros take 1/2 hr to over 6 mos, and 1 that never accepted another
ferret after his cagemate died.

It's not easy, trying to get 2 fuzzies acclimated to each other. It really
*can* be nerve-wracking.

But, what good news that Wylie's family misses him & wants him back!!
Although it was rough going for everyone, everyone ends up happy & home!

sorry it didn't work out but you gave it a shot.... I think WIlson wouldn't
accept it either. And my better half keeps asking me to go to the ferret
show in philly this weekend so that we can look around and find wilson a
brother. More like someone he can bully the little beast. I think he has his
way and wouldn't accept another buddy either.
