I'm back from the desert again--5 layovers and 40 hours after leaving =|
Whew, it's cold here in Georgia! All four furballs are good except
for two things:

First, Grey has a case of missing hair on his tail. This immediately
concerned me when saw him. After checking out his tail I noticed a lot
of blackheads on it, so I've started cleaning it today. Hopefully that
is what the problem is.

Second (and I'm being totally serious here) I noticed today that one of
my boys Zane is climbing on top of Grey, and "humping" him. I asked my
g/f about it, and she says he's been doing it the whole time I was away.
Now I know they are both "fixed", so does anyone have any ideas about
what I should about this? Grey does not seem to enjoy Zane mounting him
like this, and personally, I don't blame him. All I've been doing so
far is removing him.

Anyone?

Brian

Celtic Ferret
Either adrenal disease, or an endocrine disorder come to mind. Ask the vet.
It's not an emergency, but do get him in.

I think Kathy might be right. Unlike dogs, I don't think ferrets use
mounting as a normal affirmation of dominance. If I remember correctly,
increase in aggressive or dominant behaviors is an early sign of adrenal.

Welcome back Brian! It sounds like Zane is having some adrenal symptoms.
It should definitely be checked out because in little boys unchecked adrenal
problems can cause urinary tract blockages, which can become an emergency,
so don't put it off too long.

Hope the rest of your homecoming was filled with better news!

Hmm... well it is time for their check up, so I guess that's something
I'll need to talk to the vet about. What should I expect the vet to check?

Most likely your boy is Adrenal, Brian. Jackie Hawley has a real good vet
for this sort of stuff, but I don't know what he charges. You're at Ft.
Stewert?

Cap
There's not unless you want to run a Tenn Panel which is the best indicator,
but not 100%. If Adrenal is suspected it's best just to go in and look. The
Tenn panel will cost almost as much as the surgery depending on the vet.

Lin
Ariel was dx'd w/ adrenal from an ultrasound. Depending on how skillful your
vet *is* w/ one, that might be an option, too. However, it's not 100%
either, so Dr B went in for the exploritory, & it was indeed her left
adrenal.

Yup, I agree with Cap and the others........probably better to just go in
and have a look. This is one time you want to have a really really good vet
who knows ferrets, even if you have to travel out of town to one. Let us
know what you decide to do.

I have a great vet here if you want to make a 5 hour trip, and come to the
beach for a weekend. Doc Breeze will do Saturdays if it's arranged ahead of
time. You could stay here for an overnight with no problem.

I'm glad to know there is a really good vet there. My vet is good, but
it sounds like the one you know is probably better. I'm going to talk
to my vet about it when I take him for his annual check up.

Do you really think he is Adrenal? He doesn't do it all the time, just
once in a while.

Thanks again for your help.

It needs to be watched. If the hair loss starts, or his behavior becomes
aggressive you may want to be thinking about it seriously. Biggest problem
for males with Adrenal is swelling prostate, and blocked urethra.

I'm not sure if his behavior is an aggression sign or not. I will add
that one of the other ferrets is doing it now also. I think I have the
most unusual ferrets sometimes.

I will definitely watch him for any other changes.

Save your $$ on the Tennesse panel, Brian. Zane is adrenal. Bad part is, the
only cases that I have heard of this happening - all were male, all about 2 -
and all tumors were *not* neoplasia. If he isn't adrenal, he has a retained
testicle - and they are known to go malignant also if left in the body - so
either way, get that boy into surgery.

If you look at Zane, you will probably see the beginnings of hob rings around
his eyes - staining from the release of excess oils. A return to sexual
readiness isn't normal..

Feel free to email me anytime - Timon and Pumba did this when they were in the
shelter - Timon was 18 months old when he came into the shelter...and just over
2 when he had surgery. Unfortunately, he was bilateral and the right side
mestasized to the kidney....left to the liver.

:( Sorry I didn't see your reply to my post.

He doesn't have the marks you are referring to. I'm not sure if he is
playing, or if it's sexual in nature. Zane was getting on Grey's back
and appeared to be humping him. It wasn't constant... but it concerned
me. There is another boy who is doing it now also, and it's always to
the same other ferret (Zane). I just don't want to put him through
undue stress/pain if it's not needed. But if you truly think it is a
sign of adrenal, then I will consider it.

Also, what types of question should I ask my vet? If he does end up
having surgery, I would like to find the most knowledgeable vet in my area.

So it's always Zane that is getting b1tched? Poor guy. I wonder if he
could be having something going on (oh, I don't know, a bladder infection?)
or has he always been the lowest on the pole?

No, Zane is always the one doing the died to Grey. Although, he has
stopped doing it all together. Or at least I have not seen him acting
this way lately.
