Hi.
I just got my first ferret today. Her name is Una, and she is beautiful and
incredibly sweet. I love her already and can't wait to spend my time
pampering her extravagantly.
However, I have a couple of concerns. First, I live in a house with other
single men. I simply can't expect them to alter their lifestyles to the
point where they watch everything that falls to the floor, and trying to
keep the house that clean would be a full-time job for me.
I have a very large, four-story cage for Una that she seems to enjoy. She
has a hammock/litter pan etc. However, I was hoping that when I was in the
room with her, watching a DVD or playing on the Internet, I could let her
roam around. Now I'm paranoid though about her swallowing something. She
doesn't seem to like to eat stuff, she just sniffs EVERYTHING. However, she
dragged one of her ferretone treats onto a feather (!?) and then gobbled up
the treat and the feather before I could get over and stop her. She choked
for a bit and then spit it out, but I was scared silly.
Since she doesn't SEEM to want to eat stuff randomly, should I let her roam
around without being paranoid? Or should I keep her in the cage when I
can't keep a direct eye on her? Even when I *am* watching her, she could
gobble something before I could grab her.
Any thoughts?
Second, she doesn't seem to like Iam's Kitten Food. They fed her soft food
at Petco with Bi-Odor in it. I bought the Bi-Odor since I thought that she
would be used to the smell, but she still won't eat it. Should I try
another hard food, give her more time to adapt, or feed her soft food? I've
had her for about 5 hours. She eats the ferretone treats just fine but
hasn't touched the Iam's.
A couple of other trivial things about her happiness:
If I am home and feel like playing, but she is sleeping in her hammock,
should I wake her and play or let her sleep? Is she sleeping but would
rather be playing or what?
Also, if I go somewhere where I could take her with me in my little carrying
cage, like to a friend's to watch a movie or to my girlfriend's house,
should I take her along? She tries desperately to get out of the carrying
cage...I don't know if ferrets like to travel or would prefer to stay
home...
Thanks for any advice, sorry for the long post!

First of all, you don't say how old Una is, but if she was on soft food it
may be because she is a little young for hard kibble. That wouldn't be
unusual if you got her in a pet shop. A quick call to the pet store to see
what she was eating there might be a good idea. Ferrets quickly imprint on
their food and may not even recognize the hard kibble as food. The other
thing you might try is moistening the Iams Kitten kibble - maybe with either
water or some chicken or turkey babyfood - the just plain meat ones, not the
stew ones. You'll need to be getting somethning in her right away at this
point. Ferrets don't do well without food for more than about 4-6 hours.
Also, be sure you keep plenty of fresh clean water available too.
To let her out of the cage to play, first start someplace small........maybe
the bathroom or your bedroom. You can quickly ferretproof those areas and
be sure there aren't things like rubberbands, crayons, rubber items etc.
because as soon as she is finished just 'looking around', she will start
looking for things to play with and/or eat. It helps to have plenty of
little toys for her like small stuffed animals, small hard plastic or fabric
balls (not rubber ones because rubber in any form can cause intestinal
blockages). The best toy for a ferret, of course, is another ferret.
Yes, your ferret would LOVE to go with you. Be sure she has her
immunizations and that she's not a biter. Keep her in a small cage when
traveling in the car, then after you arrive you may choose to keep her in a
little snuggle sack (like a backpack except the pouch is in the front so you
can keep an eye on her), or on a harness and leash. You'll be surprised how
much company she will be if you get her used to going with you. NOTE:
Always be sure to carry a little plastic container of fresh water and a
ziplock baggie of her food with you, as she should be offered food at least
every hour.
I used to have a ferret that was very mellow and I took him everywhere with
me by using all the means mentioned above. Depending on his mood, he would
either be on his harness and leash, in his carry pack, or maybe just being
held in my arms. Because of his sweet nature he got passed around and
hugged on a lot. Do be careful around anyone who has a cold or flu, tho, as
your ferret can catch it and that's no fun. For the most part tho, they
LOVE to go with you. Just be sure they travel safely and securely with all
their needs being met (much like traveling with a baby or toddler - you must
be prepared).
It would be an excellent idea to get a book called Ferrets For Dummies by
Kim Schilling. It will answer lots of your questions........or don't
hesitate to come back here for ideas of all kinds. Everyone has different
ideas of how they do their own ferrets.
Congratulations on your new family.......and hugs to Una!!

Jason,
Congratulations, your in for a lot of fun. I let my ferrets roam around the
apartment freely with no worries. If your are in the room Let her out just
keep an eye on her until you get to know each other.
For the food, ferrets stomachs can be sensitive. I would find out what the
pet store was feeding her and get that and mix the Iam's with that and
slowly add in more Iams. They do make Ferret food. I do recommend ferret
food because it has additional nutrition that ferrets need that they don't
get from kitten chow. Check out the ferretstore.com they have a lot of
stuff for ferrets on it.
You can try waking her up but she may not be very playful. I have taken my
ferrets from PA to VT about 8 1/2 hours and they do scratch in the beginning
but then fall asleep. If you do bring her else where make sure that it is a
ferret proof place.
If you are concerned about her being lonely then get another one. I started
out with one for about 8 months then saw her interact with another ferret
and a week later I got another one. I love having two they are very
entertaining and when they are in the cage they have each other.
If you have any questions feel free to email me, I would love to help. My

Una is 8 weeks old. Something is wrong with the idiotic automated system at
Petco so I can't get anyone on the line. I will go tomorrow if they are
open and find out.

Well, I tried moistening the Kibble with water and she still does not seem
interested. I will go to Wal-Mart and see about kitting some chicken or
turkey babyfood. Maybe that will help. Water is ok, but it has definitely
been 6 hours since she has eaten. I gave her one hairball preventative
treat and one healthy coat treat and she ate both of those, however.

My room is pretty ferretproofed. No rubberbands, crayons, or rubber bands,
but there are some electrical cords that I can't get rid of and I *do* share
the room with someone. I will just stay close to her and keep an eye out.
I bought her a package of "ferret toys" today, but is much more interested
in any other random object around my room that she can find, of course.

Wow, this is great news. I will have to get a harness and leash! I will
get a travelling cage as well...I hope they aren't too expensive. Once I
start taking her out, I imagine that I will need to treat her for bugs. I
am taking her to the vet for her immunizations on Tuesday so I will ask
him/her about treatment.

I've already spent a lot of money on dear Una, so the book may have to wait.
I will come here for advice but I will cheat by browsing the book at B&N if
I need to.

I will hopefully be able to do this tomorrow. Until then I am going to try
some babyfood mixed in with the Iam's.

Well, she didn't touch the babyfood/kibble mix. She just went to sleep in
the hammock and doesn't seem to want to be bothered. She has been very
energetic - we've been playing nonstop for hours, so the sleeping is
understandable. I hope Petco is open tomorrow so that I can find out what
she was eating and get some. In the meantime, should I just keep giving her
treats just as something to eat?

Wow...how thoughtful. Thank you so much!
I had already decided to spring for it, though. I want to read it

Thanks again though. Incredibly kind.

Congrats on your new baby!
Ferrets don't take to sudden food changes well. You should start by mixing a
majority of the old food with a minority of the new, and slowly change the
proportions.
Ferretone and Ferretvite are good for weekly treats, but a ferret can't thrive
on those alone. You need to get some real food for her.
Ferrets can sleep at least 20 hours a day, so she's probably tuckered out.
Usually, an hour of play pretty much wears most ferrets out (there are some
exceptions though).
Sometimes, they just don't want to play. If not, don't force it. But, don't
panic, either, as there's probably nothing wrong with her at all. This morning,
neither of mine wanted to play; that happens sometimes. Last week, they skipped
both their morning and evening playtime (not usual but not unheard of). That's
the way they are. I miss them when they don't want to play, but they usually
make up for it the next playtime.

You should also try the local library :) I know our city library has all the
"...for Dummies" books and, if it's not available at yours, they may be
willing to do an intra-library loan (getting it from another library). That
way, you have 2-3 weeks to peruse until you can afford it.

Jason, dip a finger down in the the babyfood, then stick some in the side of
her mouth so she HAS to get at least a little taste of it. Sometimes just
getting it in their mouths is the secret. Do this a couple of times, then
offer her the bowl of softened kibble/baby food mix and see if that doesn't
take care of your problem.

You said you got Una at Petco. I do know that they feed their ferrets
moistened Marshalls ferret food. you might want to try that.

She squirmed violently when I tried to do this. I gave up and let her go.
I hope that she will eat tonight but for now I have exhausted my options. I
am reasonably sure that Petco will be open tomorrow and I can find out what
she was eating there.
If she goes back to sleep, I will try to put it on her mouth again while she
is drowsy.
Thanks so much to EVERYONE for all of the help and advice.

Even if you can just get the taste of it under the side of her
lip......that's often enough. You don't have to pry her mouth open or
anything like that. Sure sounds to me that she's a lucky little girl to
have such a super daddy ;-)

She was having none of it, heh. Petco opens at 10 am! So only 2 more
hours, then I will get her some of what they fed her and hopefully she will
chow down.
And I hope that she will think that I am a super daddy as well. Thanks for
all of your help.

Great, thanks! Petco opens at 10 am so I will be able to go get some then.
I'll be waiting at the door =).

Before you go buy:
get yourself a handful of raw steak or beef mince and let it try that.
Mine eat this when i have no fresh rabbit or birds for them.

To all who were concerned and helpful:
I got the Marshall's Premium Ferret Food and moistened it as per
instructions, and Una went wild over it! I think the poor girl was quite
hunrgry. She is in a great mood this morning!

Yayyyyyyyy....................persistence definitely pays off! No doubt
she was very hungry. Great that you were so persistent. I wonder how many
poor unsuspecting folks leave there with no idea what to feed their babies
and don't persist like you have and they end up starvign to death!
Sheeeesh.......I hate pet stores ;-(

Me too! The way they force people to leave with a new pet
without asking what food the animal has been fed is absolutely
criminal.

Jim -
The only experience that I have with pets is my sister's German Shephard,
who would literally eat rocks if you put them in his bowl.
I did not know that ferrets were such finnicky eaters. The representative
at Petco recommended that I get Iam's Kitten Food as a perfectly acceptable
alternative to more expensive specialty ferret foods. As a result, I
wrongly assumed that this is what they had been fed.
Why be sarcastic? I think that you probably understood what jumpingmouse &
kylie's meaning was.
Have a great day.
- Jason.
p.s. Thanks again everyone. Now I am taking Una to meet the other lady in
my life...

Actually, I didn't... because you neglected to mention that Petco
recommended you buy Iams when they had been feeding Marshals. Of
course, they do look somewhat different...

Sounds like Jim may have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed this
morning, Jason. ;-) I, for one, think you did a wonderful job of seeking
the answers you needed and getting the situation under control in a very
timely manner. Please stay around and become part of the group here. We're
like a family - some are a bit slow, some are rocket scientists, some just
plain jerks and some are salt of the earth folks...........and please cut
Jim a little slack, he's usually a pretty nice guy, but he has a low
bull**** tolerance. He's actually one of the nicer 'rough guys' on here.
<<<<hugs>>>> Jim........sounds like you need one today.

That's not true with all stores though. Ours wasn't feeding Marshall's in
the beginning and then switched over to it. Probably had something to do
with the guarantee that comes with the babies. ;-)

I don`t think Jim was being purposely sarcastic jason
I just think maybe a communication problem. I ve read it and re-read it and
can`t see the problem.
