Titusville Rescue
Saturday we gathered to face the challenge of the day. To rescue an unknown
number of ferrets. Ferrets crammed into a 25 x 25 foot shed. Deprived of
food, water, medical care, human contact. Not knowing what love is. Not
granted the dignity of a simple name.
We loaded our vehicles with empty carriers and cages and set out. A knot of
fear for the condition of the ferrets was in my stomach. Thoughts of anger
and rage filled my mind. What type of person could allow this to happen? We
set the carriers out along the staging area. We were not allowed to go to
the hoarders house.
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/k...ing%20ready.JPG
All too soon they started coming. Ferrets piled upon ferret. Pat Elmore of
Dookie's House Ferret Rescue handled each ferret and gave them all a quick
check to see if immediate fluids were needed.

Carrier after carrier full of ferrets were brought to safety.
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/k...piling%20up.JPG
We transferred the poor guys to other cages with bedding and water to get
ready for transport.
I am not to sure of the actual amount of transport vehicles, I think there
were 7 in total.
I drove a Suburban. This is it, partially filled. There are 4 cages and 3
carriers in it already. I think I stuck 4 more carriers in it. Then off I
went to the Ferrets N Limbo shelter, an hour away, in Florida, at noon.
I cranked the air conditioning all the way up.
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/k.../my%20truck.JPG
The real work started soon at the shelter.
The wonderful volunteers set to work. First the ferrets had their nails
clipped and their ears cleaned. Pat was in charge of ears.
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/k...ning%20ears.JPG
He's an expert. He caught any health concerns that needed immediate
attention. Many were started on antibiotics that night. There are a number
of adrenal and dental problems.
Then they went to get an ID number, due to the fact that they had no names.
Then came baths.
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/klutzyruth/Baths.JPG
Then came play time! Many of the poor dears had no idea how to play! No
concept of toys.
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/klutzyruth/toys.JPG
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/k...%20I%20play.JPG
I imagine the clean bedding and constant supply of water and food what a
shock to all of them.
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/k...thank%20you.JPG
I had chill bumps just watching the excitement. The dooks and dancing that
was starting to break out every where. Of course, there were the babies that
fell asleep in the litter boxes.
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/k...oo%20pooped.JPG
These babies are so starved for attention. They mob you begging to be picked
up and held. A very heart wrenching thing to see.
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/k...up%20please.JPG
Treats were unknown to them till now. Ferret Tone is very much appreciated.
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/klutzyruth/treats.JPG
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/k...0tone%20yum.JPG
Soon everyone was moved into clean houses.
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/k...ean%20homes.JPG This is only
a small part of the cages that are being used. The ferrets were given a
color code to identify them. While we were caging them, some how we ended up
with a section full of white ferrets only. Many of the volunteers have said
that this rescue has the most white ferrets they had ever seen. More than
100 ferrets were rescued.

Nice story, nice pictures, a great effort although I have to say that none
of the ferrets pictured, looked thin, malnourished or in bad shape, which,
considering how many the owner had, must have taken some effort on his or
her part.
Perhaps I am a terrible ferret owner too as my ferrets live outside with
rarely cuddles, only once a day perhaps, rarely treats, ferretone a couple
of times a week perhaps.

Nice story and all the best in the hard work you have coming to you.
I have to agree with Old Molly on the appearance of the ferrets but what a
mammoth task you must have had. And Old Molly I don't think you are a
terrible owner. Your ferrets have decent homes from what I have seen from
your pictures and posts and probably have a much better life than they had
before they came to you. Certainly my rescues have had although theoutside
ones can't have hours of attention each day I can let Kenny lose for 2-4
hours a day in the house. But then Kenny thinks he's a cat!!

I applaud all the work that everyone is doing in this particular rescue!
What an enormous task!! But I do have to agree with Old Molly. When I
was looking at the pictures I couldn't help but think "wow...at least these
babies look better than the ones in Hagerstown." At least the white babies
LOOKED white. :) How exactly did this rescue come about? Maybe I'm
mistaken by thinking they looked fairly well taken care of. Afterall I
wasn't there in person. And I do have to say the one pic where all the
ferrets are "begging" at the foot of the person in the pic...that was
adorable!! And would make a great picture to put on a shirt and sell to
help with the rescue. :)

Awesome account of a noble rescue!
Please tell us of the history of *whoever* had these and more about their living
conditions.
In light of the many rescues like this I've seen, one would think that the
problem has been solved; that the prosecution and negative publicity about them
would dissuade others from doing the same, but it appears that that's just not
true. *sigh*
I sure wish *I* could have a part in such a rescue, even if it's just cleaning
poop out of cages. That would be so rewarding. :o)

Interesting concept. I love taking a problem and turning it against itself,
making it it's own solution. :o)

I have no information about the owner of these ferrets. I have been
corrected about the size of the shed that they were in. It was aprox. 12
foot by 20 foot. It is a closed shed with no light - natural or otherwise.
They had no litterboxes or food dishes. They ran loose. This is in central
Florida - where temperatures reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit on many summer
day. I have heard for someone who saw the ferrets days before we got there,
that they were indeed much cleaner. Someone had already rescued roughly 40,
the sickest ones. I have seen these ferrets interact as a huge group. The
smaller weakest ferrets hid while the others ate and drank.
The rescued ferrets seem to be mostly pet store babies. Mostly in the 3 to 5
year range. All appear to be altered, although someone said they smelled a
poof once. It's hasn't happened again so I don't know about intact scent
glands. Of the 100 I saw, upwards of 20 had clear signs of adrenal disease.
More are suspected of having it. One large DEW has a large tumor on his ear
and a Sable is has a massive chordoma on the end of his tail.
http://www.animalsoup.net/members/k...h/New%20Guy.JPG In this picture,
he is licking Ferret tone off the table. He's having his ADV test done. Both
of them are at the vets getting treatment. Many of the ferrets are
emaciated. Of course, these are the smaller ferrets that could not win the
fights for food. Many have bite wounds, none too serious. The majority have
bad teeth and / or gingivitis. Most have neglect issues, such as poor coats,
ear mites, unclipped nails - which in some cases, were so long that they
curved back onto the feet and general lack of veterinary care. They have no
health records and all have to start their vaccinations from the beginning.
Most just seem starved for love and attention. The few who bite, seem to do
so only out of fear or medical issues / pain. The DEW with the ear tumor
bites if you reach near his head. One large Sable is scared of the cage.
They had not been caged while they were in the shed. He tries to bite when
you take him out or when you put him back, but he will give kisses while
out. Good homes and plenty love is the cure for all these babies.

Molly, I think the deal on this was the confined environment, lack of water,
lack of ventilation in the Florida heat, and just the numbers themselves.
Here is the US, you have to be in a specifically zoned area for that number
of "pets" and you have to pass an Agriculture inspection (or other agency,
depending on where you are.)
From what I got from the history - they had already been warned about
deficiencies in care and housing, and they chose not to improve conditions.
It would be along the lines of cat or dog "collectors" or hoarders. I mean,
140 ferrets is a shed....no light, no AC (very important here in the south),
no attempt to clean the waste.

What a pile of ferrets! Never seen that many loose together before. Is that the
room they were kept in (with concrete block walls), or is that a staging area?
I can imagine that it was dog-eat-dog with them, and the littlest guys probably
didn't get enough to eat. So sad........ ;o(
Any charges pending on the owner?
So glad you guys could make a difference and change that situation. There needs
to be a bounty on reporting such situations; a reward for those who find and
make them known (to motivate more people to report them).

Keep in mind that I never saw where they were stashed but there was an air
conditioner.
The pictures of the piles of ferrets are in part of the Ferrets N Limbo
shelter that they now live at. They all have cages where they are being
housed. Medical care is being provided for those that need it. The most
unfortunate get veterinary visits first.
