Is anyone else here getting bombed with virus laden e-mail (mostly MS
"patches") and such? I've gotten 371 today on my server side web mail
box. People on other groups are getting hit hard today, too.

Over 738 for me over night (and that's not counting the non-virus ones).

I've received a few (approx. 25) through my cable email, but NONE <knocks on
wood> via hotmail. This leads me to believe our problem is coming from
connection to our newsgroups. I use my cable addy with my newsreader.
Unfortunately, there is no spam filter available for me cable email.

It's a net wide attack. Many news groups are now very slow because of it. One,
which normally gets over 1,000 messages a day, only had about 30 headers this
morning.

Simple answer...YES.
I been forwarding them all to Microsoft.

EXACTLY! I wish I could forward the 1,000+ I've gotten to MS, but that
would take all day. Besides, if they stay on the server, and never reach
my machine, I don't think I can do that. But, I'm GLAD you are! If only
ten people did that, they would get near 10,000 of them! That might make
them get busy. :o)

Understood... but this SWEN.A thing that's the newest threat is
avoided simply by not launching attachments automatically, and of
course by not clicking on them. Be aware that previewing mail in
Outlook Express launches attachments in that mail.

That said I've already gotten over a dozen infected emails from
folks who click on everything. I called a couple of the locals I
got it from this morning and reminded them... "Remember way back
when when I advised you not to click on attachments like this
even if they came from God@Heaven.org?" "Yes, but this one was
from Microsoft."

That about says it all. What can you do? Some folks just don't
get it.

Yepper, I've gotten well over 200 of them today, as well, but fortunately,
between my Norton & the anitvirus program RoadRunner has, they've all been
disabled before I ever see them.

Still, I ran a virus scan a little while ago on my puter, & there was no
infections anywhere, thankfully.

I haven't noticed any slow-down in receiving ng messages.

I'm glad all my mail stays at my server, but I got 976 viruses today that I
must clean out of my online mailbox (10 at a time). That makes over 2,000
I've gotten so far. My server informs me that the virus is called
"w32/Swen@mm"

I have. On a group that morally gets 1,000 posts a day, this morning there were
only about 30. Meanwhile, I got over 2,000 of those viruses in my online web
mail box to clean out. I am going to ask the server to do it for me (and
everyone else); that's the least they can do.

I've gotten over 2,000 of them so far, but deleting them from my web mail, 10 at

Have to admit, that's one advantage to reading my mail on a Mac, I never
have to worry about M$ WinD'ohs viruses.

That's really a bit unrealistic given the number of customers
they probably have and how badly those customers will fuss if
just one wanted email is lost with the rest. It isn't their
fault. And in your case the problem is probably worse with this
particular worm because you broadcast your real email address on
Usenet. It's a great way to get spam too. Not blaming you, just
passing information that may help in the future.

No one said it's their fault. That's why I like having all my mail stay on the ISP
end. I can't even read my messages in my own in box on my comp unless I'm on line at
the time; when I disconnect, I can no longer read them, so I know it's all staying
there. But, as I said when I wrote to them asking them to do this for me (*us*
actually), I don't read the ones marked as having a virus. I anticipated what you
said; that they'd be afraid to delete valid e-mail, so I don't expect them to
comply. Actually, they need to change their online mail filter to allow them all to
be dumped at once.

What about recieving them. Downloading 300 or 400 pc of email has to be a
pain, even if the viruses are ineffective.

What bugs me is the volume. This afternoon, at the bottom of 100
insipid "Microsoft Security Patch" messages, was a legit email from
sysadmin telling me my 5 Mb mailbox was full. You'd think the moron(s)
sending the executables would realize that if the recipient doesn't
bite the first time s/he aint gonna bite. But, we're dealing w/ a true
jerk here so maybe that explains it. I cleared the attachment folder
so I can just <Alt+E+A+Delete> it of everything and empty Trash. I'm
sure I accidentally deleted some stuff my friends have sent me too.

I've also switched over to Adelphia's newserver because the one I was
using won't let you munge email addresses. The old one was a better
server, but these SWEN idiots may put them out of business.

Normally I'd agree w/ you, but in this case the SWEN dope(s) are
engaging in boring vandalism. I blame them, not the users. A la Jay &
Silent Bob, a little payback would be nice.

We'll see...

A colleague of mine has a nice little coldfusion app that goes out and
scrubs my email account of that sort of attachement. I run it on one of
the PC's here at home, I've been meaning to extend it to SWEN, and other
virii.

Advice: Use K9 or Bogofilter. They're free and they completely
cleaned up my spam problem without junking any good mail.
