I would really like to see the EKG set up for a ferret. Is it a 12 lead or
a 5 lead, or a 3 lead? Did she need to be shaved?
Glad to hear she is feeling more like a ferret now.

Hi All:
Well, Ariel's been on her Atenolol for a wk now, & the difference in her is
nothing short of amazing!
Her nose & ears used to go just totally *white*, & she spent much of her
time being very lethargic. She's now PINK - not just nose & ears, but even
her skin under her hair is pinker than it's been in ages. Her energy level
is definitely *up*, although I think she needs to re-learn that she *can*
play now, w/out feeling icky when she does. She's figuring it out slowly -
she chased Max the other day, when he looked like he was gonna steal her
Cheweasel, & she actually seemed to have fun doing it, since she was
reluctant to stop! last time I saw her do anything like that was back in
about March (we got Max on 9 Feb, & it was about a mo later that she began
to stop playing w/him or Oberon). Up to now, she's completely ignored the
rice box - now she's actively digging & burrowing in it when we put her in
it.
Ariel does still have a *few* lethargic periods, but Dr B told us to expect
that at first, as she adjusts to her supraventricular tachycardia being more
controlled (=having a slower heart rate). They come few & far between,
though, so I'm not concerned.
We go in for labs & a new EKG on 1 Aug, to see what's what, & to see if her
med needs any adjusting. For the moment, we're very happy w/ how she's
repsonding. Like I said, she seems to need reassurance that she *can* be
more active, more than anything. When I try to get her to play harder, she
just gives me this *look*, like "But Moooooooom........".
The journey we had to endure to find someone who could do the echocardiogram
to find out what the deal was, was definitely worth it. We are
head-over-heels happy w/ how she's been doing since.
I don't remember if I posted the link to where we had the test done - if I
didn't, it's:
http://www.medvet-cves.com
So if anyone ever needs that info, & you live in Ohio/Indiana/western
PA/Kentucky etc, here ya go. Dr Lemkuhl did the echo, & not only is she very
good, she's a very nice person, as well. She sent us a copy of the letter to
Dr B, as well as gave us a follow-up phone call to see how Ariel was doing
after the testing. $400 covered the exam & testing (all told, about 1.5 hrs
in the office,1 hr of it just doing the echo & the EKG), which I thought was
fine. Not that I can put a cost on keeping Ariel healthy & happy, but I
thought that, in comparison to what I've heard other people say simpler
tests tend to run elsewhere in the US, this seemed fair for such a rare test
to do on a ferret.
I'll keep everyone posted on her continuing progress, but right now, we're
thrilled & grateful!

It was a 3-lead. They taped the contacts to 3 of her legs, so no need for a
shave. Her bpm reached 350 at a couple points, & actually hit 380 once,
briefly (they did a very looooong EKG), which is waaaaay too fast, of
course! I didnt' know about the 380 until we got a copy of the report she
sent to Dr B. It'll be interesting to see how it's reading when we go in a
wk from Fri for the new one.

What is the normal heart rate for a ferret? I used to lose count on newborn
human babies... I can't imagine trying to get a pulse rate without a
machine!

120 resting, to about 250 active, according to the vet who did the echo.

There's a thought - she's small enough, at only 0.9 lbs! Seriously, though -
the dr who did the testing was the former vet cardio prof at OSU, & she said
*she'd* never seen anything like it. Good thing we caught it early, as
there's no actual physical damage to her heart as of now. We're *very*
lucky......
