Hi all,

I have been seriously considering getting a ferret for a few months now, and
I am concerned about ferret smells leaving the room that will be half
dedicated to them (with some fencing) to the rest of the place. Even with
daily pooper-scoopering this seems like it could be the case, though I have
no direct evidence yet. I was wondering if the ionic breeze air cleaner does
a good job? I bought a little one to test it out, and have not yet come to a
conclusion. Failing that, is there another air cleaner that would do that
job?
thanks,
KR

Before you start imagining problems that don't exist, perhaps you could
read up about ferrets and maybee visit a place where they are kept, like a
shelter or pet shop? You seem to imagine that they stink.
I suggest a book called 'ferrets for dummies'. and visit
www.ferretcentral.org

The only thing that stinks about ferrets is when there is not sufficient
cleaning of their messes - urine in particular. See the post below entitled
"end of tether" by Anthony Clark before you make your decision. Ferrets
take a LOT of time and much of that is spent cleaning up their messes of one
type or another. If you don't have that time and dedication, better to keep
your carpets (many have to replace them to get rid of the urine smell if not
kept clean enough). On the other hand, IF you have the time and
inclination to keep up with them, ferrets are absolutely the greatest pets
in the world.

Actually, I have been through ferret central and I have read ferrets for
dummies. I don't think it's a matter of imagining problems - I have been to
pet stores and so forth, but have had many animals in the past I know that a
certain odor will always show up where an animal is kept, to one degree or
another, even if kept very clean.
I was just wondering about the effectiveness of these particular products in
this problem domain.

I keep Kylie's cage clean daily, change blankies a couple of times a week,
clean up messes at the end of each playtime. There is no odor. Even when I
had three ferrets (and cleaned their cage twice daily and changed blankies
every other day) there was no odor. People usually come into my home and
are surprised to find that I have ferrets. It all still comes down to the
fact that messes that aren't cleaned up right away, blankies that aren't
changed and litterboxes that aren't cleaned is where the odor would come
from. As long as you keep those clean, you shouldn't need any kind of air
filters.
