Cissy is improving, she is starting to nibble a bit of hay and parsley and is
drinking. Poops are smaller than normal and a little soft, but there are quite a
few of them. She is getting around wonderfully and to look at her you'd never
think she was only one day past surgery.
I know many of you would know how to handle this, but I've had a real problem
with giving her the Torbutrol (for pain) I crushed it in orange juice last night
and gave it to her with an eye dropper. Now today, she is pretty much back to
her spirited self and when I tried to give it to her, she started shaking her
head hard and pushing it away. I guess maybe I should have just held her tight
and forced it in, but I decided to take a tiny taste myself and it is so
terribly bitter that I don't know how anyone could take it.
She really didn't seem like she was in any pain so I just gave her half an
orange flavored baby aspirin smashed and wrapped in a Craisin. After I tried to
give her the bitter stuff, she really fought me giving her anything, she
wouldn't swallow it. Thank goodness she has started eating a little on her own.
I don't have a problem forcing something into her mouth, but how do you make
them swallow? She didn't spit it out so I am assuming it eventually goes down.
I guess force feeding is not my strongest asset. :-(

Good to see that Cissy is starting to eat and on the road to recovery.
I wouldn't worry about giving her pain meds since she isn't acting as if
in pain. When Mr. Patches broke is leg, had the failed surgery to fix
it and then a week later had it amputated he wouldn't take any pain
meds. The vet said he had to be in pain but he never acted like he was
and continued to eat and try to move around the house even though he
wasn't suppose to.

Dori,
She's better off without the painkiller, IMO, if she doesn't seem to be
in pain.
So I'd just not worry about it.
Painkillers tend to suppress appetite anyway.
Don't worry, if you ever really have to get something into her mouth,
you'll be able to do it.
I'll help!

No aspirin! Nor right now! It will make her blood thinner and can cause some
hemorrage! So not right now...

Hiya Dori, glad to hear Cissy girl is doing well. when Smirnoff was
neuteured, they gave me some recovery food for him, to give him if he
didn't start eating. Well I tried to give him some mixed with banana
baby food. NO WAY would he let me give him it, he ended up with most
of it on his face, which it then proceeded to dry and turn hard, it
took me ages to sponge clean his face !!
I think that she would probably not stuggle to take the meds if she
needed them. shes probably saying hey mom, I'm fine so stop making me
swallow that vile stuff !!!!
Glad shes doing well anyway,

Dori, if she doesn't seem to be in pain, don't worry about giving her the
torb. Jessie's pain was obvious when she came home from her spay, so I wish
I had had the torb. However (to confuse everything I just said), not eating
could be a sign of discomfort for Cissy. She is there with you, so I know
that you can tell better than anyone else.
If it stresses her to take it, and you feel she needs it, you might find it
easier to give it to her on her favorite foods. It is how I give Jessie her
meds. When I give bitter meds, I syringe them onto her mini-wheat or a
Triscuit. She gobbles them right up, then grumbles about how I "poison" her
favorite foods. Syringe feeding her the meds was getting so stressful for
her that I was grateful to find an easier way.
The only problem with this method is if they refuse the food with the
medicine, the med is wasted. Not a good thing when there is limited
medication.

Dori, I'm pleased to hear that Cissy is doing so well :-)
I don't really think she needs the painkiller either. If you still want to
do it, you could try what I do. I always use thin slices of banana when I
have to give Daffy and Eric tablets. Crush the tablet, sprinkle it on a
banana sliver, then cover it with more banana. They always gobble it down
without a problem! (Having said that, they are exceptionally greedy buns).

Dori is sounds like Cissy is on her way to normal again. Thats great news.
I'm sure she will be herself in no time. I've had 3 boys neutered and found
they all acted different when they came home. Cartman did not come out of his
carrier for hours, Boo almost the same thing, and Hershey was out running
around immediately, a little groggy, but active from the start. I'm sure Cissy
will be fine.

Good news on Cissy, Dori!
When Cocoa had his bladder stone removed, I gave him the pain meds for only
one day. He seemed like he felt well enough to be without it, so I stopped
it. I'm sure Cissy won't need it. If you see her in pain, you could try
putting it in a mashed banana.

Thanks Nona ... I really appreciate it.
I was able to feed her the day of her surgery and she swallowed it, but I guess
the next day she decided she could do it herself and didn't want any
intervention from me.
She's not quite up to her normal standard of "Miss Piggy" , but she is eating
pretty good now and doesn't seem to be in any pain at all. She's doing small
binkys and getting around just fine.

I think you're right about the meds Lu, She took it the day of her surgery but
didn't want it the next day. Cissy and Smir have something in common ... I found
out she "hates" baby food ... I tried to give her both banana and carrot (not
together)mixed with ground pellets and she wanted no part of either of them, but
I mashed up fresh banana with ground pellets and she ate it with no problem.
Have I missed something? I see someone has been added to your signature !!!

I will try the banana slices if she needs meds again. She is not getting any
more pain killers this time as she doesn't seem to be in any pain. I tried
crushing the tablet and mixing it with mashed banana and when she adamantly
refused it that is when I tasted it ... I could not believe the bitterness. I
have never taken a pill that bitter. It was awful.

Anita ... I have been amazed at how well Cissy has done. She has had an easier
time than BB had with his neuter. I was expecting it to be harder on her since a
Spay is more invasive than a neuter. She's not 100% yet but is about 90% and
it's only the second day. I am just so relieved that she'll never have to have
that done again.
Thanks for all the help.

Thanks Arlette:
I don't think Cissy needs the pain meds now, so we have stopped them. I wish
