nhu, i don't know the medical amounts but if you purchase a syringe at the
drugstore it should say cc's on it. it would be the type to use for a baby.
good luck and i will continue to say prayers for your baby.

Hi Nhu,
I'm so sorry to hear that Baby is ill. I know how worried you must be, boy
do I know.
Did the vet give you plastic syringes without the needles on them? They have
cc's marked on the side. You just measure out the medicine that way and
syringe it into the side of Baby's mouth. Just be very careful not to give
to much so he doesn't choke. It may be helpful to wrap him up snugly in a
towel with just his head sticking out, so that he doesn't squirm away when
you try to give the medicine.
I would also try giving him wet parsley. Bunnies often enjoy that when they
are ill. If he has a fever, he must have some sort of infection that may
have kicked off the tummy problems. I would also recommend giving him some
infant gas medicine (simethacone) You can get that at a drug store. This
will relieve his gas pain, and hopefully he will eat.
I would give straight water rather than juice. Sweet things could compound
the tummy problems.
Please let us know how things are going! I will say some prayers for Baby
too.

Hi Nhu,
Did the vet give Baby any sub-q fluids while you were there? Pineapple
juice is okay, as long as it doesn't have a lot of sugar. If I was
giving liquids I would make sure that I gave pedilite because it has
electrolytes.
Did the vet give you a syringe do give Baby his medication? That would
be the best way of knowing that you are giving the right amount.

Sorry Baby is not feeling well. If you have a drugstore near you, someone in
the pharmacy could give you a syringe, and the syringes are marked. I usually
get the curved tipped ones so that the sharp edge will not hurt my bun's mouth.
Hope Baby is well quickly. Carla and Claire.

My non-bunny vet years ago had me give Harley pineapple juice to help with what
he diagnosed as a hairball (I'd say gi stasis now!). Anyway, after about 4
days, poor Harley's mouth area started bleeding! The acidity of the pineapple
juice ate away a lot of her fur around her mouth. :( So I'd say stick with the
water or pedalyte. Those will hydrate her better and I think would be easier
on her mouth and tummy.
Speedy recovery Baby!

Hi Nhu,
sorry to hear about your Baby,it's really important to keep him hydrated, you
can mix the baby food(or whatever else you are feeding)with the Pedialyte ,I
think Michele suggested the same thing,it worked for me in my occasions and
with different animals...
As for the pineapple juice...it's a good thing in case there is some sort of
blockage in the stomach, even a hairball, the pineapple juice and the papaya
juice both contain enzymes that would help breaking whatever is there. It
should be the "real thing "though, and possibly not canned because the
canning process destroys the enzymes...and those are what you need!!! You
can buy a pineapple or a papaya and after you clean either of them, you can
put the juice and the pulp in the blender, add some water and feed it like
that,it's also better because that way you are sure there are no sugars
added....which,as Arlette wrote, they can just compound the tummy problem!
Don't give up.....I have a good feeling you'll take your Baby out of
this, just don't get discouraged by "the miserable look"..! I know what you
are going through!!
((((((hugs))))))
Shan
PS: if you decide to give water,I would give Baby spring water in this
case, the chlorine might upset his stomach even more now....just a thought..

Hi Nhu,
Do you have a syringe? They're usually marked. 1ml = 1cc.
The temperature is a bit worrying.
As Daryl said try to keep Baby hydrated.
Did the vet check in Baby's mouth?
Did the vet say what he thought was wrong?
Did the vet say anything about coming back for a check up?
We'll keep the big healing vibes and prayers coming.
Take care both of you.

Hi Nhu. I'm sorry to hear Baby's ill - we're sending mega eat and heal vibes
to him!
When I was doing critical care for Rosie - she was getting 25 ml (1ml=1cc)
at least 2 times a day and then 3 times a day for awhile in addition to the
reglan, baytril and everything else she was on. I'd mix up abuot 1 1/2
teaspoons of critical care with 3 teaspoons of water, then mix that baby
food (squash, sweet potato, or carrot) and then stick in a big old syringe.
If the vet didn't get you one of those (mine went to 30 ml), definitely get
one. Makes force feeding a lot easier! And Rosie's barely 4 pounds. Don't
know how big Baby is, but I know you have big bunnies, so he may need much
more.
Hang in there...I forcefed Rosie for 2 full weeks and she's just fine now!!
:-)
Praying for Baby,
Laurie

Nhu,
I will pray for you and Baby. I know what it is like to have a bunny
who won't eat for you. I also know what it is like to have your brain
turn to mush. Mine was water when Cadbury was sick. Maybe you should
try some hay to stimulate her appetiate . Good Luck with Baby and keep
us posted. At least you know to force feed her my horrible vet did'nt
tell me anything at all and they are in the business of saving lives.
Uhm.

Nhu,
You're doing great, and you're taking great care of Baby.
I know he will feel better soon.
Sometimes it takes a little while for the medicines to start working,
plus the medicines themselves may not make him feel real well.
Force-feeding him to keep his GI tract moving is great, plus, of course,
letting him know how much you care--which I know he does know.
I am thinking of you and your Baby.

Hi Nhu.......Sorry I got in late on these posts but I have to ask ...Is this a
blockage? Did vet take x-rays? blood tests?....If there is a blockage, feeding
him will worsen the problem so I'd make sure not to stuff him without knowing
for sure. If I've missed info please excuse me as I'm mostly a lurker and have
not read all the posts leading to Baby's return from the vet.

Next time NHU, tell us up front and
the group can help you better!
What did the Doc really say about the
X-Ray? With regard to organs and stuff.

Thanks Daryl,
It always worries me when people syring e feed their rabbits without knowing
for sure if there's a true blockage or not. Best to have a vet feel around and
if uncertain have an x-ray taken. Feeding a rabbit that has a blockage could
lead to rupture.
The advice to force feed rabbits is too generalized and should only be done
once it is confirmed that the rabbit can improve with it.
I prefer to give lots of liquids sub-q or syringe.
Vet should prescribe reglan or cisapride if there is no true blockage, along
with gas-x or Ovol (simethecone). This has been my experience and of course is
open to discussion :).
