Hi everyone *sigh*,
I wouldn't have believed it. I think it started when my mom came. I noticed
I was getting the odd red itchy bite on my legs. I thought maybe a spider or
something. It was truly weird, since I never saw anything.
I think I was in her room during some of the bites, but then last night, I
was in our ensuite bathroom, one of the two rooms in the whole house with
carpet; I was sitting on the floor in my nightgown reading and I noticed to
more red itchy bites on my leg...then I felt something crawling on me under
my clothes.
And there it was...a stupid FLEA! Before I could make a grab for it, it
hopped away. It must be in the carpet there somewhere.
I HATE fleas. We used to have them on the cats when I lived at home. We just
sort of lived with them and it seemed you just had to put up with them. The
last time I went to my mom's with Cocoa (eight years ago), he brought a flea
back, but I sprayed his cage with flea stuff and it disappeared. Mom says
they don't have fleas at home now, but I'm still thinking this flea came
along with mom for the visit. I hope it is only a renegade lone flea.
This morning, I checked Cocoa over for flea dirt. I didn't see any, but boy
his fur is so dense, I can see why the flea prefers furless me. I don't
think Raymond has been attacked.
I also, and this may sound stupid, sprayed my bathroom with Black Flag house
and garden bug killer. Do you think that would kill an adult flea? Please
tell me it could!
Anyway, I don't know what to do now. I don't think it is any sort of
infestation...yet anyway. I don't think it has been bothering Cocoa, but I
can't say for sure. I just know *I* have bites. Maybe I will have to get
myself a flea collar?
What have you all used for your rabbits. I know about Advantage and Program,
but have any of you used them? How about your houses, what have you treated
them with?
Now I'm worried about taking Cocoa to my mom's if there are fleas there. I
supposed he could have picked some up outside, though I am doubtful of that.
Fleas just don't seem to be as prevalent here in the north.
Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Mr. Patches has been on the feline version of Advantage for the past
four years without a problem. It must be working as we have had no
fleas and I don't treat the yard so he can munch on the clover.

There must be something going around. Jessie had her first flea, too. Two
years outside and no fleas. Bring her in the house for two months and she
gets one. Go figure!
I think she got it at the vet's office.

So what are you doing about it, Anita? Did you put Jess on flea stuff?

Hi Rich,
Thanks for the info. So, do I just look for the straight cat stuff, or is
there a kitten type? I don't want to treat Cocoa unless I really need to.
I'm going to watch a bit first, I think I need to take the Advantage. I seem
to be the only one that has gotten bit. I did feel a bump on Cocoa's nose,
but I thought a mosquito got him outside. I did see one biting there before
I could swat it off. Maybe it was actually a flea bite.
I'm just very alarmed about this, since we are supposed to be visiting my
mom in a couple of weeks. Mom said her cat hasn't had fleas for a long time,
so it must be from somewhere else. Do cat fleas just live outdoors? Could
birds carry them? I'll have to do some more research :) I just don't want to
be bringing any insect tourists with us.

Arlette, we've had fleas here for the last 3 summers. Stupid fleas. I use
the Advantage on everybunny and everykitty. The Advantage for cats/kittens 9
lbs and under is what I use on everybunny - we use it every 30 days in the
summer because the stupid fleas lay eggs and it's just easier to get em. As
for the black flag...I don't know if it would kill the eggs/larvae - i.e.
how long is it's residual death knell - and does it say it kills fleas on
the can? I know Tina uses the foggers to kill the fleas. I've also used a
borax type sprinkle type fleakiller in the carpet that effectively gets in
the flea carapace and kills it by drying it out.
I hate 'em too. Where there's one...there's more. I order Advantage in bulk
from Australia...cheaper by the dozen!

AUSTRALIA?!?!?! Is that where it comes from? Hmmm
Well, if the flea(s) aren't on Cocoa, do you think I should treat him
anyway? Probably, huh. I was reading about a home mixture of Borax, baking
powder and something else for carpets and furniture. We only have a few area
rugs except for two small rooms. It just sounds really messy...LOL
Thanks for the info :)

I use the same size Advantage as Laurie does but since I don't need it
in bulk I get it from Mr. Patches vet as it's not carried in stores. I
think we paid around $10 per 30 day dose.

If you are going to be at your mom's for at least a few days, consider
bombing the house. Yes, I know that sounds a bit drastic ;-) You could set
a flea bomb off after the bunnies have left the house, and by the time you
get back home it should be safe. There are some possible problems. You
might have to leave some windows open, and you might have to make sure it
can't get to your hay. Look at one and read the instructions and cautions.

Hi Arlette,
I have no clue about what medication you need to use but I do want you &
Cocoa to soon feel better.
take care & apply some calamine or some cream on your bite.
keep us posted.

Please remember that fleas only go to a host to feed, so if you have seen
one flea, there is a very good chance that there are many in the home. You
can get a spray which lasts 30 days. This will kill the adults and any eggs
which hatch in the 30 days, and then treat again. Do the entire house and
the animals at the same time, or the fleas will just hide elsewhere until it
is safe to come out!
