When we got Munchkin we believed the pet store guy who said she was a
Netherland Dwarf. Since then I've learned to be more skeptical about
pet store guys. I've looked around on the web from time to time to see
if I could pin it down better than he could (he told me a lop was a
rex, and even I can look at the ears well enough to spot the
difference there).
Anyway, I've been pointed to some other possibilities by one or two
people here, and I just ran across yet another one, which looks more
like Munchkin than other pictures I've seen. I'm just wondering what
people here think.
Here are a few pictures of Munchkin
http://home.comcast.net/~jhalpin10/munchkin.html
Does that look like this to you (this is a picture of a Chinchilla
Mini Rex)?
http://www.webone.com.au/~nikkiw/Vieri.jpg
In particular, the ears, eyes, and general shape of the head look very
similar to me. Also the big feet.
Probably not world shaking, but I'd welcome opinions.
Thanks

Joe, I'm certainly no authority on rabbit breeds, but I've always thought a Netherland Dwarf was a
small rabbit with smaller ears. The two photos look to me like the same type of bunny ... almost
looks like the "same" bunny :-) ...
This is some information I found on the Mini Rex:
The mini-rex rabbit is a very diminutive rabbit with a maximum senior show weight of only 4 1/2
pounds for does and 4 1/4 pounds for bucks. Its body is rather short and close coupled. The top body
line rises gradually from the base of the ears to a high point over the center of the hips and then
rounding downwards to the base of the tail. When viewed from the tail end, a Mini Rex is
approximately as wide as it is high. When viewed from above, the body tapers down slightly from the
hips to the shoulders. The ears are rather short and thick and are carried erect.
The fur is one of the most notable features of this breed. The guard hairs are the same length as
the underfur giving an extremely plush, silky, feeling to it when stroked. The fur has a lustrous
appearance and has a distinct springy feel when depressed. The fur type has earned the Mini Rex the
name "velveteen Rabbit."
The main feature of Rex rabbits is their very beautiful and very soft fur. It feels just like velvet
when you pet a Rex rabbit. The Mini Rex is a new breed that was first recognized in 1988 and is an
accepted breed in Great Britain and the United States. This breed was first recognized by the
American Rabbit Breeders Association in 1988. Mona Berryhill, who is from Texas, first bred them
from a cross between a Dwarf Rex and a Rex rabbit. Another source states that the Mini-Rex is a
cross between a small Rex and a Netherland Dwarf.

Yes, that's what it looks like to me as well, but see below...

This fits Flopsie pretty much exactly, but Munchkin is a little
smaller, I'm guessing she's only about 3 1/2 pounds.

Most of this is close to Munchkin as well, except that the fur has a
quite different feel. Flopsie's is just like this description, but
Munchkin's is coarser.
I think you're right about the ears. The pictures I've seen of NDs do
look like they have shorter ears. On the other hand, her head in
general is shaped noticeably different than Flopsie's, and does look
more like a ND to me.
I still think she's a cross between a ND and something else, maybe a
mini-rex.

Gosh, another possibility. What am I going to do now :-)
I found some pictures at
http://www.centralpets.com/pages/ph...O_RBT1438.shtml
which does look kind of like her. However, Munchkin has a noticably
wider face than these do. The bottom picture shows a dewlap much like
hers though :-)

Hi Joe,
I looked at a close-up of Munchkin in the middle photo, and looks like
she has long guard hairs. Mini-rexes (and full-sized rexes) do not have
guard hairs. In other word, they do not have hair that would blow in any
breeze -- the hair is short and dense, like velvet.
I have two mini-rexes, one has the long, mini-rex face, but the other
has a little round head. Most mini-rexes I've seen have the long, thin
snout.
Another rex thing is that their whiskers are curled. To look at them, it
looks like they have no whiskers at all, until you look closer and see
the little curls.
So, I don't know what breed Munchkin is, I think most pets are mixes.
Her coloring is very pretty. Lots of tans or agouti-type coloring have
some white around the eyes, under the chin, and on the stomach. We had
some yellowish-agouties that came into the shelter, they acutally were
lop mixes. They had the roundish head of a lop, but their ears stood up
straight, and they had the yellowish and white coloring of Muchkin.
Joyce leads a rabbit 4-H group, maybe she'll be able to help you home in
on the breed or breeds.
When I go to the state fair here, I always go on "rabbit day". You might
try to do something like that. Seeing the different breeds in person
always looks different than a picture.
Good luck!
Rhonda

Yes, that's a good thought. I'll check around and see if there's
anything like that here.
Thanks

What kind of Bunny is Flopsie? It must be terrible not actually knowing what breed your bunny is ...
My two are supposed to be mini lops, but I don't know anything about their ancestry so it is
possible that they could be cross breeds as well. BB has really thick springy fur that is so soft
and Cissy still has her baby bunny fur so don't know for sure how hers will turn out. Keep us posted
if you figure out about Munchkin.

Definitely NOT a ND. As Rhonda mentioned...probably not a Rex judging from
the fur. He is probably a mixed breed, but could have Californian or Satin
in him.

Do you have links to pictures of Californian or Satin types?
I'm quite sure she's a mixed breed at this point. It makes no real
difference, she's still our bunny, but I'm curious.
Thanks

To me the exact breed is not important, for example Twinkle is smaller that a
Dwarf lop (USA Mini lop) has spine stripe and flank spots, so to me she is an
English Spot with a miss marked face (probable cross with something but thats
not important ), for pet bunnys then near enough is good enough :)
What was the best thing before sliced bread?
Before they invented drawing boards, what did they go back to?

I can go with that, I'd rather have her here.

Ah yes, New Zealand too, I was thinking that but couldn't remember the name.
Thanks Beth.

Here is the site I use for photos http://www.arba.net/photo.htm Many of the
breeds come in various colours, so the photo show there doesn't necessarily
represent the only colour they can be. Californians are usually white, so
scratch that. Satins can be any colour, but their fur it very satiny as the
name suggests. I believe the hair shaft is hollow which gives it a certain
sheen. New Zealands, as Beth said, has a high probability. But, like Cocoa,
Munch may be just a heinz 57.
Cocoa reminds me a lot of a Satin with his shiny, black fur, but his mom was
a white and tan dutch and his dad was a REALLY BIG white rabbit. So...no
pedigree here...LOL
