I thought regulars might appreciate an update on Max.
1. Tummy Aches: Max has been taking Actigall or a (much cheaper) generic
version for over three months now and has not had an episode where he
stops eating for hours and behaves as if he is in considerable pain. The
veterinarian wants me to continue with the medication (Ursodiol). We
just started a 100 capsule bottle ($144) where Max takes 1/2 capsule per
day.
2. I had thought that Max's tummy aches were due to the high fat
diet he was put on to prevent his calcium oxalate stones. So,
I switched to a homemade diet. Eventually, I consulted with
a veterinary nutritionist (per Buglady) at:
http://www.petdiets.com/
The nutritionist was concerned that Max was not geting enough protein and
vitamins/minerals in the diet I was using from Donald Strombeck's book.
Max's diet, right now (per day) consists of:
1 cup black-eyed peas cooked
1 cup brown rice cooked
2 tsp flax seed oil
1/10 tsp Morton Lite Salt
1/2 human multivitamin/mineral tablet
1/5 Foster and Smith dog Vita-Min
1 500 mg calcium carbonate tablet (no Vitamin D)
Additionally, Max takes potassium citrate to keep his urine
above a PH of 6.8.
Max seems to be doing very well on this diet. He certainly
prefers it over the previous diet that basically was one part
peas to three parts rice.
My only concern is that the human vitamin contains Vitamin C
which breaks down into oxalate. The nutritionist does not think
this is a problem given the high water and urine PH levels
associated with this new diet.
I have found a human multivitamin/mineral without Vitamin C
and I hope the nutritionist will update the diet.
I plan on taking Max in for a checkup in two months.
Thanks for your continued interest.

Thanks for the update. I was just going to ask for one when I saw your
recent post. How wonderful that things seem to have stabilized for your
boy, and thanks also for the detailed report on his diet.

That's excellent news, Marshall.

And that's half the battle, eh? When they also like what's good
for them.
Rocky's medical condition is influenced by his diet, also, so I
have an idea how much effort you've gone to. Good boy!

Hi Montana,
I recall you kindly enquiring about Max before.
Thanks for your continued interest and support.

One of the reasons I came to the dog newsgroups was because we had to
learn about living with a dog with cancer. We now have two other dogs
that have special needs.
I am interested in what you've done for Max and in updates about him.
His problem may be another dog's problem.
His (and your) continued success bolsters all of us with special needs
dogs.
Thanks for the updates.

We have only had one dog before. She was a stray, 6-year old GSDxLab. She
really never had any medical problems except those associated with aging.
She had a sweet disposition and I have only now come to recognize how
fortunate we were with her in relation to Max's health problems.
The strange part about our first dog was that when we adopted her we did not
have any idea of dog longevity. She lived to be about 12 yrs old. For years
after her death, I missed her companionship. Laura Nero had this lyric,
"nothing heals like time and love."

Yes! That is another reason I have posted about Max's progress.

How are you and Rocky doing in controlling his epilepsy?

It's only been a year since my old girl's death. Rocky and
Friday were a large part in helping me deal with it so quickly.

Heh, Rocky's with me.
He's doing really well. It's been over a year since his last
seizure.

Yup, them's what Rocky's named after. His CKC name is "Cruisin
the Rocky Road" (the kennel is 'Cruisin'). My first choice,
"Rocky Mountain Cruisin", was rejected my the CKC.
