I have a 1 1/2 year old Rott that always get what we think are ear
infections. We keep the ear clean but all of a sudden during the night she
start flopping her head back and forth. We clean the ear out, and there
seems to be some dirt but not much. She seems fine then the next night the
same problem. Does anyone know what the problem could be. I have taken her
to the vet and they just told us to keep the ear clean with a solution they
prescribed.

Well, IF you and your veterinarian can't find a medical problem for the
behavior then you may have unintentionally trained the behavior.
Does your dog do this about at the same time each night?
How much exercise does your dog get a day? I can expect
similar behavior from my dog if he is not well exercised.
When she does this, what do you do with her?

........Has the vet ever looked at a sample of ear debris under the
microscope? You need to talk to your vet and find out what he thinks it is.
Sometimes you can't tell by just looking at the ear, so if he's just
prescribed without checking you might be getting nowhere with the problem.
Does the dog itch or scratch anywhere else on her body?

Seriously, time to get a new vet. My last vet just gave me ointment
(Otomax) for my dog's ears and no deep cleaning. New vet actually flushed
out all kinds of stuff, some of it looked like scabbed over foxtails, and
the cleansed ears had a wet oily look afterwards. He also gave me some
antibiotics and more Otomax. Problem cleared up, but it does come back
every 8-9 months (dirt, wax, and yeast infections) which requires another
costly $90 cleansing. I can usually smell the bacterial smell (or yeast
infection) when it's time (ugh!).

......You might be able to keep them clean in the meantime with a 50/50
vinegar water flush once a week. Otomax can be dangerous if the ear drum is
punctured. Vets hand it out like candy, but it's not entirely safe.

You can say that again. One of the side effects of Otomax, particularly
in elderly dogs, is permanent deafness. Our Keeshound suffered that
side effect. (Ear drums were intact)
