I just read this article about the author, Jim Willis and was shocked
to hear this.
His articles, poems and books are well known online. He was apparently
charged with animal cruelty and was living with 74 animals (dogs, cats,
ferrets and birds).
Does anyone know more about the story?

Where did you read this? I did a search, I found nothing about it.

I'm sorry, I did not include the link. Here it is.
The news story is at The Pittsburgh Channel
http://www.thepittsburghchanne l.com/news/4868789/detail.html
The animals were taken to Animal Friends Shelter
http://www.animal-friends.org/
I am hoping that there is a misunderstanding and that Jim was just
trying to help these people, but I don't understand how he could live
in a home like this.

Thanks for that, Julianne.
Eeeagh!!! I have to agree w/ the statement that, even though he was not the
homeowner, being that he's been living there for the past 6 wks, he had a
responsibility to report the conditions those animals were being kept in.
"Intentional" or not, "good intentions" or not, it sounds like these people
were certainly not "rescuing" these animals. Sounds more like a collector
situation to me. Dogs appearing to not have been let out of their carriers,
in some cases for "years"??? The owners had young child, were gone long hrs,
& just didn't have the time to devote to the animals? Good God - if that
ain't abuse, I don't know what is.
I think this Willis guy *should* be held responsible to some degree. He'd
been living there for 6 wks - I'm sure he *had* to notice what was going on!
You can't just hide that # of animals, after all. He should have reported
it, & he should have gotten his but outta that house immediately. By staying
there that long & not reporting it, it's almost as if he were condoning that
behavior & those conditions.
Maybe my take on it is pretty harsh, but this kinda crap just makes me
CRAZY!!! It's no different than abusing/neglecting a child.

I agree. If someone lived in a house where people abused children, and
did nothing to stop it, they would be in big trouble. Right?
Of course, we don't have all the facts, but it certainly sounded like a
hoarding situation from the video report.
