Omagod, It's CHICKEN!! - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
jacquie, kylie & gilbert
I have a series of stories that my sweet little Gilbert has prompted me to
write from time to time with his sweet antics. Some have already seen
these, some have not, so I will begin posting them now and then so you can
see just how and why this little guy has sooo stolen his mommy's heart.
This is the first in a series......this one is entitled: OMAGOD, IT'S
CHICKEN!!

I'm preparing a nice little chicken for dinner this evening. A tender little
neck was included inside it and I *know* (from all I read and hear from
other folks) that some of you feed raw meats and aren't chicken necks
supposed to be a real delicacy - especially the nice tender small ones???
WELL, I washed it off good, as mommies know to do to keep salmonella and
nasty stuff off of it - and presented it to Gilbert as if it were a prized
possession JUST FOR HIM...........

He sniffed it...backed up...stuck his neck waaaaay out (so as not to get ANY
on him or anywhere near him) and took one more little sniff with his nose
soooo twisted up that it hurt just looking at him!! Then he........GAGGED
and looked at me as if I were trying to poison him!!

....aren't ferrets supposed to like tender little chicken necks??

Oh well..........I'd say it's safe to assume that Gilbert won't be needing
any further chicken necks

So, now I'm wondering - how many here feed raw meats of any kind to their
ferrets - and they like it????

Three of the four I have left like mice and day old chicken. Rose just acts
like it isn't there :-)

Paula
I gave mine two chicken wings once.... I found one in the cage and the other
under the TV cabinet, so I haven't bothered since.

I suppose I could just leave it on the side of my plate - they'll definitely
want it then :o)

Of course they'll want it then :-) But I think the end result will be the
same, you'll find a dirty chicken wing underneath something.....

Sanguine
Mine have minced meat..raw or cooked. They also love chicken, but like
it chopped up in inch sizes..if I just give wings, they leave most of
it. They love most meat...as long as it's good quality.

Sandy and the Dook City Gang
Mine eat chicken geavy, raw m,eat, mice.... that kind of thing. The
delicacy is crickets. I had two that thought meat was poison, but
they're eating chicken gravy now.It only took a couple of days to
convert them. I gradually took the kibble out, so now they're eating it
plain and semi raw. I'll take that.

You missed one important step. Lather it in Ferretone/Linatone. My
youngster (8 w/o) took to raw meats easily. The 3 y/o took more
persuading (maybe the food dish was a little low in the morning [shoot
me]) but he came around as well. Now 1 1/2 and 4 y/os, they'll chow
down 20-30g of raw chix/beef/day. They're about 50/50 kibble to meat
these days.

I tried to switch to cheaper cuts of chicken and mine wouldn't go for
it. My guess is I should've gone for the cheaper cuts the first time.
Live and learn.. or experiment, anyway.

As you know, once they've set their minds, for or against, it's pretty
much set.

Me. I buy ~pound of chicken and ground beef, slice it into chunks, and
freeze them in a Ziplock. Then I take out a chunk at a time. Don't
forget the Ferretone.

Thats a funny story. i can't wait to read more. ;)

Joan
I feed raw...chicken necks, wings, thighs, and organs, as well as
rabbits and mice. They're raised on it from about 4 weeks on and you
really need to watch your fingers when they get a whiff of it. They
have kibble available (a 50/50 mix of Natural Gold/Evo for cats), but
eat relatively little of it. The dams of the first litters I raised on
meat only ate kibble at the time, but it only took them a day or two to
decide that the kits had a good thing going. After that, they chowed
down on the meat right along with the kits. It took another week or so
before everyone was gobbling it down...you know how ferrets hate the
idea that they're missing out on something.
