We had a beautiful thunderstorm this evening - even had a little hail.
I know all you 'easterners' and 'northerners' don't think that's a big
deal, but in Arizona, it's quite a treat!! :-)
I tried giving Gilbert a tender, tiny little chicken neck last night.
We were having a whole chicken and it looked so healthy and tender. I
washed it off to get any bacteria off, then blotted it with a paper
towel and presented it to him...........YUCK!!! You would have thought
I was trying to poison him!!! He turned his little nose up sooo
scrunched that it looked painful! LOL The second sniff, he gagged.
ROFLOL. I guess I got the answer - no, mom, he doesn't wanna be on
Fear Factor. Oh well. I always thought it was supposed to be so good
for them. I wish I could get my kids to eat some really healthy meats
- raw would be nice. They aren't even very interested in cooken
chicken, so why was I surprised. I think the most surprising thing was
the look on Gilbert's face when he was gagging - as if I was really
trying to give him something bad! My boys would never touch anything
raw either, so maybe it's na acquired taste. I considered (briefly)
cooking it on the BBQ grill and offering it again, but them remembered
that *cooked* bones are dangerous for them - it's only the raw ones
that are safe to eat. So he got duck soup and kibble for dinner, as
usual.
It has been SO hot here (over 100 for days now!!) but it does cool
down nicely at night, especially if we've had a rain that afternoon or
evening. This is the beginning of our monsoon season, so we should get
rains almost every afternoon/evening - some big ones, some little
ones.
Night before last I was sitting on our deck on the porch swing,
watching the clouds and lightnight as it came closer and closer.
Finally I decided it was close enough that I'd better go inside. Just
as I got up, lightning flashed in front of my eyes SO bright that it
temporarily blinded me. I stumbled over to the huge livingroom window,
where I could see Chuck sitting inside, pounded my fists on the windows
and hollered "let me IN!!" Duh.......that window never has opened -
it's not designed to open. He kept telling me "go to the door" and I
finally got UN-scared enough to understand what he was saying and go to
the side door to get inside. Sheesh. Once inside I realized that I
had peed my pants, I had been SO scared! LOL Now THAT's scared!!!
Sheeesh. That's the second time lightning has hit REALLY close to me,
but the first time I peed my pants over it LOL.
It has been to hot to take the kids outside lately, but I'm hoping it
will rain early enough one day that I can put their playpen on the deck
and lay out there on my porch swing while they play. Soooo many smells
up here in the mountains for them!! They LOVE to go outside! Where we
are, our deck is cantilevered over the side of a mountain that goes
straight down and everything beyond our back fence is National Forest,
so I'm a bit protective of them. Yup, there's lions? and tigers? (not
sure abou tthat one) but there's definitely bears and bobcats and
coyotes! So I have to keep them very close to me when we go for our
walks.
Is everyone surviving the heat well this summer? Gosh, Phoenix had a
power outage last night that was supposed to go all night in some
places and I automatically wondered what in the world people with a lot
of ferrets did for cooling......it was around 100 degrees overnight.
That hasn't happened to us in Yuma yet, when we were spending summers
there, but I had about three different plans that ranged from a freezer
full of ice, to keeping them in the car with the air conditioning on,
or going to a motel as close as possible out of town, but where they
had a/c and getting a room. None sounded like much fun, so I'm glad
we've always been lucky. We had one ferret start panting once (which
indicates overheated ferret emergency) and I soaked him down with cool
water and held him in next to a rolled down window (in the car on our
way home from Phoenix, in the middle of nowhere!!) and by rubbing the
water down into his fur to his skin and letting the air blow thru, I
was able to keep him cooled until we ot home. I was absolutely
drenched when we arrived tho. I used that extra gallaon of water I
always take on trips thru the desert - now I know exactly what it's
for!
Hope everyone's having a great summer - I'm anxious for updates! A
special <<hugs>> to Brian on the loss of Buster. You've been on my
mind, kiddo.
love ya,
jacquie, kylie & gilbert

I know what you mean about wanting rain so bad! We've had one rainfall in
the last week or two. It's been miserable because it's been sooooo humid!
We don't have the air conditioner in either. The kids have been doing
pretty good though (they're all hiding in sleep sacks if that tells ya
anything). The rats on the other hand, have been struggling a bit more.
But they're getting frozen goodies and a shallow tupperware pool. :)
That's hilarious about Gilbert and the chicken neck! I can just picture his
little face!! Poor little guy...must've thought you were trying to kill
him! We had a power outage Monday....lasted six hours!! It was aggravating
considering they were trying to tell us that there was no outage...well
um...duh...we're sitting here in the dark and it's not by choice! Sure
makes things more difficult when you have a well and septic tank. :( So
that's really how our summer has been going. Just seems to increasingly get
worse! But maybe if I get the job that I just had an interview for things
will start looking up. Keep your fingers crossed for me! I just need to
get out of the situation I'm in at work. I may be a bit of a masochist, but
that place is ridiculous! Anyways, every furry kid is doing well here.
Zoe's been even better now that she's on pred.
