My Ariel has rat tail. She was adrenal not quite 4 yrs ago, it was removed
(not cancerous), & currently, she has a heart problem that's completely
undocumented in ferrets, supraventricular tachycardia. She was dx'd by my
vet, Dr B, w/ help from Dr Lehmkuhl at MedVet in Columbus
(http://www.medvet-cves.com). She has been on Atenolol for about 2 yrs now,
& is doing very, very well. However, she developed the rat tail while she
was in the process of being dx'd for the heart condition, & it's never grown
back. Her tail is almost totally bald from just below the base of the tail
to the tip, w/ only a few random hairs scattered here & there.
Does anyone know if this will stay like this? Is it due to age, (she turned
5 on 20 Apr of this yr); is it because of stress caused by the heart
condition; by the Atenolol; or what?
Just curious if anyone has an idea ~

Just a PS: Otherwise, she is in really good health, for being 5 yrs old w/ a
heart problem. She doesn't play as hard as she used to, doesn't like mixing
it up w/ the boys, but is still bright eyed & thrilled about getting out of
the cage a few times a day for playtime, even though she spends most of her
time playing Steal the Cheweasel w/ me.

Hmmm...is it possible that the adrenal is back? If not, then I'd guess
possible stress. Although, Zoe has had seasonal rat tail, but this time
around it's just staying that way. Her's does not seem as bad as Ariel's
though.

Have you tried the scrubbing the tail with zit soap and a soft toothbrush
routine?
It could be stress, too. I had two males that had naked tails. Both were
still symptomatic of adrenal although they were bilateral removals. One got
a melatonin implant and that helped him regrow his tail fur.
Good luck, Lin. Naked tails are cold in the winter!

Well, her last ultrasound didn't show anything abnormal, & neither do blood
tests. She's been like this for almost a yr, w/ no changes in hair loss,
behavior, swollen vulva (never did the first time, either, cos we caught it
way early), nothing like that.
It's worth checking out again, though.

Yep, everytime we do baths, she gets a good tail scrubbing. She doesn't have
anything blackhead-looking on her tail, though. It's just pink & shiny! :-)

Her tail is cold *all* the time! It still surprises me, everytime I pick her
up - "ewww, what's that cold thing? Oh, it's your tail again!"
