Ok, First off, I Just read lighthouseferrets's post under my quarantining:
I have wondered if I should be tested for rabies. I highkly doubt i have
rabies! but I come in contact with Tons of animals everyday.
Second
I am really upset over all the madness going on here. Im not sure who
Millie is now or If the phrase Pooflingers means something bad.
I know I went to that pooflingers webpage and I loved the ferrets on it
and it was a nice tattoo of the Ferret king(?)
Now who is Karen? Why is everyone fighting? I know that on my Yahoo
group i just joined there is a Millie. Is it the same millie from here?
I only know this is something I would have seen 10 years ago on a teen
chat board or something.
I do know this is crazy with people attacking people.
If Lighthouse ferret is Millie she does not seem to be causing problems.
All the post seem to be calm from her. I don't know how a true ferret lover
could come here and cause problems with the rest of us. Do you even own
ferrets? What will you do when something bad happens to your ferret(s).
You will have no one to turn to, No one to understand your pain. Why must
you come here and ruin it for the rest of us. Now, It is true one or two
bad apples ruins the whole bunch. I seem to think Millie is nice.
I have also heard that some people are soooo unhappy with themself they
would rather have bad attention than no attention at all. Is this what this
is about?
This is the first place I have seem to find that has ferret lovers and
now here I am thinking of not being a part of this group anymore.
I do know this much...My life is awful too. I am 25 years old. My marriage
lasted 2 weeks...If that. I have 6 step kids. My husband JUST now after
almost 2 yrs is signing the papers. I am stuck in wisconsin. Have not seen
my mother in almost a year. I lost my job. So what could make you
depressed enough to have to ruin what could have been a good friendship with
someone?
Im not sure yet what I am going to do. I just am confused as to who it is
safe to talk to and who it isnt. Im sorry if I have offended anyone. I
just think I walked into something bad here. I am not sure If I am going to
stay now or not. I know I kept seeing on another group a TON of people bad
talking APF. Is this why? I have also noticed people from this news group
being some of the people doing the talking. Should I take this as a hint.
I wont say any names. I just want to be able to talk to ferret lovers and
share stories and pictures and get advice from. Should I leave this group?
Is this the wrong place?
Lost in confusion

There are quite a number of electronic forums for the discussion of
ferrets. You can find several Yahoo groups, for example. One you
might be interested in trying is the AFA's own forum:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ameri...retAssociation/
I happen to be the moderator of that one.

No, you don't need to be tested for rabies or distemper. If you were
bit by an animal acting strangely, it might be recommended you get
rabies shots (I don't really know if there is an actual test for it for
humans) but unless you were bit you have nothing to worry about.
There are fights in here often because it's unmoderated here and people
can say their peace. It gets bad here at times, and at other times
it's all about ferrets. There are tons of boards all over the net.
I saw your post on another board, and I looked up your yahoo profile,
and I have a question for you. Here you say you are new to ferrets and
ask very new to ferrets types of questions, but on your profile you
have a link to a website where you are looking for free ferrets in the
Sheboygan Wisc area and you say there you've had ferrets for ten years.
So are you new, or have you had ferrets for ten years? Just
wondering...

I am 25. When i was 14 almost 15 my dad had 13 ferrets. I have always been
around ferrets. Last yr i got 2 ferrets whom I had to give to my sister.
Now that I own my house i have two. Rufus and Spirit. My sister is moving
and giving me back my other two Rambo and Valentino. I have a pretty big
house and tons of space for them. I even have a pet bedroom. At the end of
next week I will have 4 ferrets, 4 cats and my boyfriend! Does that answer
your question?

Amy,
No you shouldn't get tested for rabies unless you were bit by a suspicious
animal. :) Now, as for the crap that's going on here. Ignore it. It's
stupid and just chases away the people that want to talk about ferrets.
Oh...and just for grins, I'm 24. ;-) No kids, 'cept furry ones. ;-)
Married for almost 7 years now.

Yup, just curious why the differences. Wow 13 ferrets 10 yrs ago -
that's a lot. I have four right now, and a fifth will be adopted in a
few days after she is vaccinated and vet checked out. ADV tested
negative already. I also have a bedroom just for the ferrets. They
are worse than kids for making a mess LOL!
Hope you find your niche here on the net!

My first consideration when looking at a place is its suitability for
ferrets. I've always had a ferret room since I had more than 3.
Currently the count stands at 14, but most of those are young kits.

You can't be tested for rabies, or, not in the usual sense of "test"
anyway. The test involves immuofluoroscopy of brain tissue, meaning
the subject has to be euthanized first.
If you're handling "tons" of animals everyday you *can* be immunized.
It's a series of HG inoculations and costs around $700. Personally, I
wouldn't sweat it unless you're handling wild animals.

Ah, usenet grasshopper. You must learn what's important and what's
not. Here, ferrets are important. The squabbling isn't.
I believe "Pooflingers" is a double entendre. It can be either "poof
lingers" or "poo flingers." Whether that's bad or not is up to you, as
is the rest.

Stick around, Amy. This, too, shall pass. I hope. This comes and goes
and, as far as I'm concerned, it's definitely time for it to go.

There is no test for rabies. The animal that bites you must be tested,
and that requires them to be euthanized.
If you handle a lot of animals who have not been vaccinated against
rabies, such as certain wildlife (raccoons, foxes, bats), you can get
pre-exposure rabies vacs. I had them done several years ago since I do
volunteer wildlife rehab. It was a series of 3 vacs on a very strict
schedule. The shots ran $100+ each. I have to have my titers checked
every now and then to make sure I am still protected. If I am bit, I
would have to get a booster.

Well, actually there is. There are a few ways to test ante-mortem
(i.e. before death). Nucal skin biopsies from the back of the neck,
corneal impression slides, tissue culture innocculation tests of the
cerebro-spinal fluid and sreum neutralization tests of blood to check
for circulating rabies anti-bodies (the last would not be applicable
to people who have been pre-immunized). That's the god news. The bad
news if the results come back negative it means nothing and if it
comes back positive it pretty much means you can kiss the baby.
If rabies is allowed to progree to this point it is almost invariably
fatal. Timely post exposure vaccination is at or nearly 100%
effective.

True, which is why all our little fuzzies in the U.S. should be
vaccinated. If done properly, if they bite they would not have to be
killed and tested.

Vaccine given on days 0, 7,21 or 28 for the last shot.

If your titer falls below .5 international units you should consider a
booster dose.

Actually two boosters on day 0 and day 3.
