My three year old ferret suddenly developed a small disk swelling, that I
initially thought was an irritation of it's tit. The swelling has grown & I
am afraid that it may be a tumor from my reading. Does anyone have any
experience with this? Does anyone have any idea of what a vet would charge
to remove it?

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks.

i can tell you when my " woody"
had his adrenal tumor removed
it cost $600.00.
it was well worth it and after a
couple of months all his hair
came back and he is doing
great.

My estimates now run $500-$700 to remove the 1/4" tumor. Seems pretty high
for my $125 ferret.

Ouch. I'm really sorry....

that that is how you feel. :(

I have 10 ferrets and tho' money doesn't grow on trees, not ONE will
ever lack because of finances.

I love them! And they depend on me for their comfort, safety and
medical care...

no price tag included...no limits.

Please, if you can't/won't give your kid the medical attention please
find someone who might, maybe a ferret shelter near you?

I took in a 6yr old ferret with multiple problems, kid NEVER seen a
vet....$600 later (surgeries etc...) he was fixed fine and thrived
after that.

It's about the ferret. ;o)

Unfortunately, this is something you should have budgeted for (& researched
to find out about) before getting your companion. Ferrets are prone to
several serious diseases/disorders, & I think I'd probably be close to
correct in saying that every ferret owner will encounter at *least* one
major biggie w/in the first few yrs of having ferrets in their lives.

I spent well over $2000 to get my Ariel's heart problem dx'd. It would have
been more than worth it, at twice the price.

One doesn't deny Grandma her meds when the prices go up. My ferrets are as
much a part of my family as my kids are.

Sorry to sound harsh - which I don't mean to do, seriously. But that's just
the way it is. Pets are not disposable. Taking on the responsibility for the
care of an animal is no different than taking on the responsibility for the
care of one's family.

I automatically started remembering that when my son was born, it only
cost $350.00 - I'm pretty sure we should have traded him in for a
hamster before he was in kindergarten if price was an issue. LOL

Vets charge all different amounts - Where you live has a lot to do with
it. I know some places it costs $1,000 for adrenal surgery - here it's
$250 last time I had to pay for one. You also may actually find that if
you search out a vet who works on ferrets a lot, the cost won't be as
much because they already have the equipment, etc. Plus you have the
advantage of them knowing more about what it could be, so maybe less
tests, etc. It's hard for us to sit here and tell you what it will
cost you, but if price is that much of a problem, you definitely should
have gotten a hamster. The very least you can do for your ferret - if
you can't afford to get him proper care - is to take him to a shelter
and hope that someone else will give him the proper care and love he so
deserves. It's a shame that our shelters get these kinds of problems
'dumped' on them, but it is a fact of life, unfortunately. The best
we can hope for is that someone reading this will be so incensed by
your lack of concern for your ferret that they will go make a big
donation to a shelter for all those little ones who had similar
'parents' at one time and were dumped when they got sick.

And you wonder why I sometimes like ferrets better than people? Pets
love us unconditionally - it's a damn shame when we start judging their
worth by what we paid for them. Thank God you didn't have him given to
you - maybe just buying food would have been asking too much.

Sorry, but this pisses me off. I'll go back to lurk mode now. :-(

I am not sure where you live but there are some vets that will let you make
payments. Having a pet is much like having a child. Some kids are allergic
to certain milk or maybe diabetic. So on so on. I would check into your
local vets and maybe your humane place there. Maybe there is some kind of
funding or some place that could help you with your problem. I do have to
agree with the rest, If you dont have the money to take care of the health
problems that come along with it, Maybe you should surrender your baby.
Think of it this way....If it was a Person who had cancer...do you knnow how
much it would cost? A heck of a lot more. Just keep your spirits high.
Maybe someone can help you or let you make a payment plan.

Good luck and I hope everything works out

I agree with Thunder here....I have 4 cats....I started out with three and
got all of them fixed at one time. I had JUST lost my job and they decided
to write it off. 3 months later i made a 1,000.00 donation and whenever i
can I go there and help out. I love all Animals, And it makes me feel good
to be able to help them out the way they helped me.

Thank you all VERY much for your responses. You have all been so insightful
& in some respects humorous. I am in an area with limited vets that work on
ferrets & wanted to assure the range that I would pay was not a rip off.
Agreed that every dollar spent in caring for a loved one is well worth it,
but in budgetary times it is prudent to make the healthcare dollar
effective. It looks like the vet bill will exceed the family medical costs
this month. : )

Now the tumors on my daughters pet rats. If this were alt.pets.rats, I
wonder ..... $4/rat : )
