I have been meaning to ask this for sometime. I have a lot of ferret info
but im not sure about nail clipping. I dont clip real far, But..Someone
said something about buying some kind of powder incase i ever clip to low.
Does any body know anything about this? Thanks in advance

And also, I just heard of something called the green slime virus in ferrets.
I was told to make my baby ferret get it while she is young so she dont get
it and die when she is older. What should I do?

Hi Amy,
The powder they're referring to is styptic powder. I believe you can
get it at any pharmacy. Men sometimes use styptic pencils if they cut
themselves shaving. It help the blood clot quicker. I tried the
powder on my leg once when I cut it shaving, and it burned like the
dickens. So, I don't use it unless I have a really hard time stopping
the bleeding. Usually just applying pressure will stop it. You can
also try baking powder, flour, or scraping the nail over a bar of soap
to stop it. Most of the time, it will stop pretty quickly on its own.

I wouldn't advise exposing your ferret to ECE. It's easier for young,
healthy ones to get over it quicker but I wouldn't intentionally make
one sick. Use quarantine procedures if you bring in a newbie, change
clothes and bathe if you are around other ferrets, especially pet store
ferrets, and you should be fine. If your little one does get it, it's
not a death sentence.

I agree with Gator, Don't expose your ferrets to ECE. :)

There are a few methods for clipping ferret nails. You can try putting
a little Ferretone on your ferret's belly, and clip the nails while they
are preoccupied. That does not work with my furkids, so I scruff them
and clip. You might want to have someone help you if it's your first
time -- a second pair of hands never hurts. Don't cut too close to the
quick, which it the pink area.

Styptic powder is what you are referring to. You could also use corn
starch to help stop a nail from bleeding.
