get one from a shelter or buy one from a pet store??? are they good with
cats????? also i got a guinea pig cage would it be a good home for the
ferret????? also we do have a dog that comes visit she loves the cats but i
dont know how she will be with the ferret shes a golden retreiver and i know
thats a hunting dog and she does have the hunting instinct for the birds
would she be a good companion for the ferrets????

Well, I would suppose it would depend upon the senior citizen. Ferrets
teeth just like puppies and kittens do and if a senior has thin skin that
could present a problem. They're also very active and if the senior is not
very active then I don't think it would make a very good match. Definitely
go to a ferret shelter first! There are a ton of ferrets out there looking
for homes. At a shelter you'll be educated on ferret care, and if you're
able to adopt you'll have a friend for life (not only the ferret, but the
shelter operator!). Older ferrets are usually best for someone that is just
getting into owning ferrets. Ferret kits can be very challenging! Some
ferrets are good with cats and some not. Depends on the ferrets and depends
on the cats! I would not mix guinea pigs and ferrets. Is it possible to
have both in the same house? Sure. But I wouldn't let them interact. As
for dogs, depends on the ferrets and depends on the dog. If this Golden is
good with cats, then chances are I would think she'd be good with the
ferrets. But in any case, there should be supervision.

A guinea pig cage would not be big enough for a ferret, going by the guinea
pig cages I've seen (& granted, I have no experience w/ pigs).

This question about the right size for a ferret cage or pen is pertinent to
anyone who is acquiring their first ferret. Perhaps the old hands here
could offer some advice for their benefit. Speaking for myself, when we
"inherited" Bacchus from our son, I decided to design and build a home for
him out of plywood. The size I selected is that which would practically fit
in the available space in our basement, i.e., an open top enclosure
5'X5'X30"H. Most people, however, will buy wire cages and keep them in a
living area. Its seems a small cage suited for a rodent is not going to be
large enough for an active, intelligent ferret. Any thoughts as to optimum
size and sources? - CW

What are the dimensions of the cage?
"Small" or "large" is a fairly subjective term to most people. For my 4
fuzzies, for example, I think they pretty much have enough room in the cage
we have - which is actualy 2 SuperPet ferret kingdoms attached together by a
tube connector on the upper side doors. We started off w/ one of those, when
we only had Ariel; meaning, she had that whole cage to herself. We got the
2nd one when we got Oberon. We didn't have them attached, cos Ariel &
Oberon didn't seem to get along well enough (after several mos of trying)
when kept together in a single cage - Ariel was used to being a single
ferret. When we got Max, Ariel seemed to hit it off immediately w/ him, so
we attached the cages then, & it was easier for Ariel to get along w/
Oberon, since she had another friend. We just added Puck to the mix after we
got him, & it's worked out well. We have 3 litterboxes, 2 sets of food bowls
& water bottles (we had bowls until we got Puck, who likes to snorkel), 2
large hammocks, one small hammock (where all 4 seem to end up sleeping
together - go figure!), a cuddle cup, & various blankies, old sweat pants,
etc, to burrow through & sleep in. Do I wish they had more room? Yeah, but
we get them out to play often, & they mostly just eat & sleep in there
anyway, so I think we're ok. They seem to like it - even when they're out
playing, they run in & out of their cage often, sometimes just to go to a
top level to get a human's-eye look at what's goin on.
So now that I'm done rambling, exactly what *are* the measurements of your
cage? :-D

For one ferret, I would say a minimum of 3feet long, by 1 1/2 feet
wide, and 2feet tall with 2 levels. That would be a fair size for a
typical active ferret.

Our cage has those, but there's no excuse for having them impossibly raked.
It's easy & cheap to buy extra shelves & ramps at either petstores or
online, & you can easily move the shelves, & thereby adjust the slope of the
ramps, making them quite safe - & also giving them a lot more levels to play
on.
I'll have to take a decent pic of my setup sometime, & post it.
