Sorry for not posting about him. I finally got out for the 4th to have a
little fun. He no longer will eat any treats. He is being fed, not forced
fed per se. He gets 3 feedings and still has kibble in the cage which seems
to grow smaller and a water bowl and a bottle. He has not found the bottle
so i catch him drinking the from the bowl from time to time.
He is on Metacam (once a day) and cipro two times a day. He does not sleep
in the hammy, he sleeps on tshirts and sweat shirts now and only goes to the
bottom level to go to the bathroom, there is a tent there as well but i have
not seen him in there as of late.
I fear as though he is loosing strength in his hind quarters which would be
the mystery thing. As of now it is a support thing, i am not sure if as of
yet what is is and either does my vet. Hopefully the diags from the
pathologist will come back. i had the biopsy done and he hasnt been the same
since but he does not have cancer. it seems that the white blood cells are
high and they went off to a pathologist for more results..
he is on another med for his stomach in case there was stress,
metatranzionale (sp) and i need to get more of that. Does anytone know if
that is really helpful at all?
I am pulling for this guy. He is blind still and I don't think that is
helping this situation.
thanks everyone.

Metronidazole, also called Flagyl, is an antibacterial medication
commonly used for treating intestinal problems in ferrets. It's
supposed to be very effective though it's extremely bitter tasting, so
it can be difficult getting it into the ferret.
I'm sorry there hasn't been any improvement yet, Brian. How long will
it be before the path results are in? Hopefully they'll be helpdful!
|

Thanks everyone. Thanks......... The path results should be in by the end of
this week. They already had one path from the biopsy and it was nothing more
than high white blood cell count with a note on it that it is the mystery
disease. Not 100% but there was a note on there so another cbc was done and
it was slightly higher with the white blood cells, so they were sent over
again. As I said they should be back this week. I suppose I will get the
mettronidazole again, he takes that well but the real one he hates is the
cipro. it is foul and i can even smell it from the syringe.
On top of all of this he is blind. What a difference from being a young kid,
jumping all over the place to seeing this. All I can say is that he is
gaining weight. so maybe I should cut back on the high calorie stuff and try
to get him more kibble, which i have seen him do. Sad part is that he is
hooked on the chicken and gravy and a little cream mixed in.
Once again thanks for everyones thoughts and help. i can only support him
and try to get him better along with the vet..
thanks for your thoughts.

Can you post cbc data here or on FHL? [too many idiots wasting
bandwidth here at the moment]. Ferrets seem to universally hate cipro
and flagyl. Metro's kind of boring but if they'll take it and it does
the job then I'd let it go. How 'bout an eye/saliva culture or stool
sample? Seems to me you might want to know what you're fighting before
fighting it. Keflex is broad spectrum. Not bad as a last shot. Just
throwing out ideas... Folks on FHL will know more.

Sounds like you're doing fine. If he's gaining weight you're gaining
ground. Weaning him from soup back to kibble is the next step. Took me
6 weeks once to get Mike from syringe to finger to bowl to feed trough
(kibble). He lived another 8 years.
Check the cbc details and let us know.

the first cbc was fine, than they did the biop which came back high with
white blood so than they sent out another, i don't have that yet. I just
know they said it was high and i never thought of getting the figure off
them. I will call and have them fax it. can you throw me the link to fhl?
as far as stool it is about 2 a day and it is a little more black than
usual. but the vet had done a culture on him last week and said it was ok.
the two or maybe three that come out are, as i think a result of the chicken
and cream. I will take another over there. everytime they check his temp he
passes one and it looks good.
eyesight was confirmed in a dark room where they do in house xray developing
etc. he sees some shadows perhaps, but most of the sensory comes with the
guard hairs (that is what i call them) by his mouth area. Anything further
away he does not realize.
as for now i hope i can get him more stable and get him to use his hind
quarters more. he uses them and than after 30 seconds is ready for a nap. it
is taxing.
i know it is hard on him. he doesnt like snacks or toys now. just the basics
of life. as long as he is licking the syringe and getting a drink while i am
asleep, as well as, looking when i say Buster than certainly I am going to
do whatever it is I can.

Sure:

If you're paying for the cbc you're certainly entitled to a copy of
its results. I'd insist on it.

Hmm. Mine have presented somewhat "blonder" stools when they're
getting heavy cream. The consistency firms up as they get well. That's
when I start moving them back to their regular diet.

As others have said, ferrets aren't nearly as dependent on eyesight as
we are. For that matter, none of mine have had good eyeballs even when
they were young and healthy.

When he's feeling better he'll start using his rear wheels more. Mike
was off his for almost 2 months, then came back strong. Hind end
paresis is one of the first presentations in a sick ferret.

I don't know much about this "mystery" disease, only what I've read on
the FHL and Mike J's website. Sounds like another virus.. just what we
need... but manageable w/ enough tlc.

You got it Swamp.. hanks for the info... He is still in there but as I said
sick. I mean i am not sure at this point it is sicker? The only thing is
that the stools are not blonder but then again he is eating more kibble at
times.
From what I read most don't make the mystery disease and the biop the vet
sent out had a note on it that it might be that but not sure. My only
concern at this moment is that his normal breathing would be like 1,
1000....2, 1000....... 3, 1000... then they went to a compression of like 1,
1000 or 1, 1000 and a half. now they only half a click. Before the vet said
it was ok at 1, 1000 and a half but it is faster now so i suppose another
visit should be warranted.

Cripes Brian, I constantly wonder when I'm crossing the line. Vets
know way more about animals than I do. However, I know that a typical
ferret heart rate is 200 b/m. Sounds like bump bump bump..bump 1000...
bump bump bump.. 2000. First time I heard it I thought the ferret was
having an attack.

I wasn't talking about the actual heart rate as that sounds like what you
said to be right. i was talking about the lung compressions that i can see,
also see his nostrils flare if that helps any. not even a 1000.. just up
down up down.. nostrils flaring as fast.
