I think I must have magic rats or a VERY strange ferret. Never in a million
years would I have tried this intentionally, but it happened last night.

The girl ratties cage has been moved to my bedroom. Every night they come
out for an hour or so for exercise and play.

Last night, when I went to let the ladies out, SallyMae (ferret) came to
meet me from under the bed. I picked her up and cuddled her, while telling
her she had to leave the room so the ratties could come out for awhile. I
took her to another room, returned to the bedroom and shut the door. Out
come the ladies, over my bedspread, under their balled up old bedspread, a
couple hit the floor at a run... I stay with them a few minutes then leave
the room to finish up a few things.

Time for bed and reading, while the ladies play on and around me. Walking
into the bedroom, here comes Riley (ferret), trundling out from under the
dresser. I almost panicked, until I saw Lovie (blind rat) trotting along by
his side. My mouth falls open as Riley stops, looks up at me, and Lovie
cuddles up to him. I stood there not quite believing what I'm seeing.
Kneeling down to pick up Riley, Lovie tries to climb on him to go with him,
so I let her go with us when I took Riley back to his and SallyMae's cage.
Rats and ferrets are NOT supposed to get along... what's going on here?

Returning to the bedroom and the other ladies, I explained to Lovie what she
had been doing was not natural. Even without eyes, she looked at me as if
to say... I cuddle with cats, why not ferrets? Then she went about her
rattie business, along with the other ladies.

NO... I would NOT suggest rats and ferrets playing together. From now on,
the ladies do not come out unless I am sure there are no ferrets in the
room. That is just a tragedy waiting to happen. But I thought it odd and
interesting enough to share here.

I've become convinced over time that for every "rule" there are exceptions. We
have a cat who used to sleep with my son's guinea pig, and the pig seemed
perfectly happy with it.

Hi Julia,
That is a fascinating story. You mentioned something about Lovie cuddling
with cats. Would you tell about that too?

All the best,
Peggy

msjdoolittle
Lovie is blind... no eyes... I bought her that way. She seems to be totally
fearless.

Several of my cats seem to have no interest in catching/killing my rats.
These cats will actually play with the rats, but usually just ignore them.

Here are some pictures of Lovie and cats. The first link is Lovie with
MystiKitty, they napped this way for about half an hour.

Then album has a few more cat and rat pics.

LOL... I wish I had, too. Do I dare try to document this with a picture,
and put them together again?

I thought the same thing, Sam, when I read it on the rat group!! I thought
for sure Julia would've gotten a picture since she has such nice ones of the
rats and cats!

Really great pictures. I'm so glad I asked as I didn't think that was
possible. So cool to see them living side by side happily! Thank you
for sharing your pictures.

It had to have been!! I think I would've died if I had seen it! Although I
could see Kolby being alright with a rat (although I don't think my rattie
girlies would appreciate him very much!) But Zoe and Stormy....I don't have
any doubt they'd kill them or try to anyways.

absolutely loved the pics i had three cats (noel, blue, itty bitty
kitty) and two ferrets (gizmo and gidget) noel and blue wanted nothing
to do with the ferrets but itty bitty kitty was a kitten and formed a
close friendship with gizmo and gidget they went every where together
it was funny to watch gizmo chase itty bitty kitty all over the house
with a 6 year old at the time trailing close behind them what a sight
and what hours i spent laughing at the three of them then my little
gidget died in my arms and gizmo and itty bitty kitty became
inseparable my landlord decided to take the house to live in and i had
to move and sadly to say the new landlord let the kitties come along
but said we had to find a home for gizmo i sadly placed him in a
loving home and two weeks later had to take itty bitty to the same home
to keep gizmo and her from grieving themselves to death gizmo went to
the rainbow bridge about a year later and the kitten only 3 years old
followed him not more than three weeks later no one will ever tell me
that kitties and ferret babies don't get along i'm glad to know that
mine weren't the only ones thanks so much for sharing the great pics

SallyMae tries to play with the cats, but for the most part they ignore her
or run off. Two of my cats will play with her sometimes, but not often.
Riley mostly ignores all but SallyMae... he's more of a cuddlebug.

There was a story on Animal Planet a while back about a stray cat and a
crow that had become best buddies. They showed video of it and all. It
was truely amazing! Why not a ferret and a rat!? :)

msjdoolittle
oooo... I saw that... the crow raised the kitty... was still feeding it!

Did you see the one where the Duck is feeding the Koi in the pond? LOL

I love Animal Planet. I'd love it even more if they'd include more
ferret related shows though! ;)

Joan
That might be taking just a bit too much of a chance! <G> I loved
your story and the pictures. I've never had any rats for pets, first
because my Basenjis all had strong hunting instincts and now because of
the ferrets.

If I didn't feed mice, I'd be very tempted to give it a try. They've
always sounded like fascinating pets.
