Literaly everyone I speak with regarding the issue of bird diet
(including two Avian vets) suggest a staple diet of pellets along with
fresh fruits and veggies.
However two breeders I know use KAYTEE Forti-Diet for the breeder
birds.
I assume an Avian vet (or group of) approve all the bird food products
KAYTEE sells, so I'm wondering what's wrong with Forti-Diet as a
staple? What research do we really have that pellets are the best way
to go.
Pellets seem really unnatural to me (I feel like I'm feeding my bird
the equivalent of a human diet based around PowerBars or Nutritious
Shakes) so 'd like to know more about what's wrong with seed based
diets and also if anyone has tried to feed their birds a custom diet
around the type of things these animals (in my case a conure) eat in
the wild: insects, mealworms, berries, seed, etc...

Seed isn't very natural, either. In the wild the seeds that a parrot usually
eats are, first of all, completely different species then what the seed
mixes have, wild seed isn't usually dry, most birds prefer green seeds that
are soft and alive. The Forti-Diet is vitamin coated seeds, yes? The problem
with that is that the seed hulls are the parts that actually have the
vitamins, and the birds discard the hulls. So the vitamin supplement would
be wasted.
There are other reasons why not to buy Kaytee. Kaytee breeds birds on a
massive scale, and sells them to pet stores. (either PetCo, or PetsMart, I
forget which) Dog and cat food companies don't breed dogs and cats for the
pet trade, so why does Kaytee breed birds? Zupreem is a much better pellet,
any way.
Personally I feed by thirds. One thrid of the diet is made up of fresh
foods, like yams, papayas, cooked grains, greens, etc. One thrid is pellets
(Zupreem), and one thrid is seed (from CCChirps, a local seed company with
reasonably priced high quality seed mixes). That way all the bases are
covered, and my birds get a balanced diet.

Zupreem is McDonalds of pellets. When I first got my AG and didn't
know better I tried it. My AG refused to eat it. So when I won a 20 lb
bag I gave it away. The fact is I now buy Scenic and Tropican which
not only are premium pellets, but cost less than Zupreem.

KayTee does not breed birds for re-sale, their subsidiary contracts with
breeders and buy birds for resale.

My Lovebirds won't touch pellets of any sort. I tried them on them and
you'd think that I was trying to feed them poison. They love the Kaytee
Fortidiet Safflower blend. I add in more safflower seed and some sunflower
seed to the mix. Some of them like carrots some like cantelope some like
broccoli and some like all of them and some other stuff. All of them don't
like pellets.

My birds won't touch Scenic (which is funny, becuase they eat everything
else I give them, including every other type of pellet), and I don't know
where you live, but it is very expensive around here. Zupreem is definately
cheaper. I've never used Tropican, so I can't compare. Of all the formulas
I've seen used in the nursery at the store I used to work at Zupreem
produced the best results, babies raised on Zupreem were big, healthy, and
colorful without being TOO colorful. (The store prefered to use Zupreem, but
kept the babies on whatever formula the breeder used) The one bird I saw
raised on the Scenic formula was a Ducorps that was so pink I thought it was
a very pink Goffins. Didn't seem natural. Birds raised on PPP formula and
Kaytee were grayish colored with dull feathers and VERY dull red coloring.
This was especially true with the Asian parakeets. Zupreem babies had glossy
green feathers, nice bright reds, and didn't look like they'd been dunked in
a vat of pink dye. Any ways, that's just my experience.

Detroit, but I buy it over the net. Two pound bag of Scenic cost
$6.00. The last I looked a three pound bag at Petco was close to
$12.00.
