Peaches' (lovebird) beak looks like it needs to be trimmed. It's gotten a
bit longer, curved and looks like it's developed a crack towards the very
end. She's not having any problems eating or anything like that.
She has a cuttlebone. She occasionally scrapes on the cuttlebone but not
all that often. I'm taking her to her vet in a few weeks for her shots and
a checkup; do they trim beaks?
I never had to think about this with any of my parakeets since they chowed
down on their cuttlebones like it was a treat or something which kept their
beaks in line.
Thanks,
Jill

I have seen people talk about this here. Some claiming it should be done,
others saying never to do it. If you type it into Google you should find
many posts on it. I have never done it to any of our birds and the Vet, who
is only an Avian Vet has never mentioned anything about it. Since you are
going in for a check up I would ask them. It is an Avian Vet you use right?
See what they think.

Yep, he's an Avian Vet. I've never had another bird need beak trimming but
I'll ask. It is probably just I'm not used to having a lovebird as opposed
to parakeets. Thanks :)

How's his diet? Most of the birds I've seen who needed beak trims had liver
problems from eating seed-only, the few who didn't had beak problems because
of a crooked beak or injury to the beak.

She eats a pellet diet and gets lots of fresh greens in the form of kale,
spinach and cabbage leaves. She adores chomping on carrots and also slices
of apples. She gets seed in the form of the occasional millet spray. She
hasn't damaged her beak in any way. She's still her usual playful, chirpy
self. Probably doesn't need a trim but then I've had parakeets all my life,
never a lovebird until 2004.

Probably just "Mom syndrome" as I call it. <G> My wife is always finding
"something wrong" with our Macaw. He has a scratch here, or this does not
"feel" right here, and such. I always say "well if you're really worried
make an appointment at the Vet". She seldom will do this, since the bird
acts like nothing is wrong. When we have a regularly scheduled appointment I
always tell her if you have any questions ask them now. The Vet is always
real great about this. Always takes the time to just talk for a while after
she is done, and ask how things are going in general with us and the birds.
I was really glad we found her, she is great with the birds.

Hello there Have you tried a calcium perch. These look like a grit block but
are coloured and are long perches. They come with a washer and a butterfly
screw thing to attach to the side of the cage. You can get them in various
thicknesses. My Corlla and the Superb (Barraband) both have them in
different sizes.Good luck I think once you start to trim it becomes
something you have to continue.
trish in sydney :)

My Jardine hens has a beak which is deformed. One side of her lower beak is
misaligned so growns longer and longer. I put in a perch called a
'calciperch which is a rough perch made from crashed seashells. She loves it
and chews on it, eventually it gets all gnawed up and she gets a new one but
it is the only way to keep her beak trimmed without resorting to clipping
which I would prefer not to do.
