Hi, all

We all wish we could do something to really help protect wild birds from the
horrors of trapping, transport and trade. Well, you can, because (through
the combined efforts of the World Parrot Trust, the American Bird
Conservancy , Defenders of Wildlife, Eurogroup for Animal Welfare, Friends
of the Earth-Europe, Greenpeace, IFAW, Jane Goodall Institute, National
Audubon Society, RSPCA and ProWildlife and a total of 226
non-governmental organizations) there is a chance to stop importation of
wild birds to the European Union (EU)-- THE WORLD'S LARGEST IMPORTER OF WILD
BIRDS.

This is important stuff--kind of like the Wild Bird Conservation Act is to
the U.S.--which was associated BOTH with a drastic reduction in importation
of live birds AND (despite dire predictions by some), a marked DECLINE in
illegal poaching (well, I guess that's a redundancy in terms).

So what "should" or might you do?
Here are some suggestions from the World Parrot Trust, reduced to a few
lines:

1./ if you haven't already, sign the petition at
http://www.worldparrottrust.org/trade/tradeuk.htm

2./ go to the website www.BirdsAreForWatching.org , a new website devoted
SOLELY to this issue. Lots of information and neat ways to act. Check out
the TradeBand--a good way for individuals and especially organizations to
get involved

3./ If you want to be informed with good facts, including about the huge
numbers of birds involved AND diseases such as END and avian influenza, read
the final declaration itself. It's not long and it's beautifully and clearly
written. Anyone concerned about conservation of wild birds should read this
(IMO, of course).

It was mailed by Jamie Gilardi , Director of the World Parrot Trust, and
is attached herein so that you don't have to search for it

4./ If you really had a hard day and are short of motivation, and want to
see PHOTOS which would get any bird lover motivated, there is a great
article by Tony Juniper in The Ecologist which Jamie Gilardi has made
available but it is 1.5 mb. It is available through him. However he is
probably swamped; I'd be glad to respond to requests for these if you inform
me you want the electronic .pdf file -- if you promise to read it and spread
the word of this campaign

5/ Write Tony Blair (politely)....address: 10 Downing St. London, England,
SW 1A 2 AA UK, requesting honoring of Labour's pledges to end wild bird
imports

6/ hot-link your website to #1

7/ cross-post all of this widely

Jonn Lennon sang "Imagine"...well, Imagine a world where, literally,
hundreds of thousands of birds a year were left alone to live and fly in
peace. This isn't a pipe dream--thanks to WPT and the other groups listed
above, this just needs, perhaps, a last big push.
One, two, three...

Thanks
....on behalf of the birds

S. Metz

You really are stupid graham, these people want to END bird keeping not just
the trade in birds.
Will you part with your birds and let them "live and fly in peace" as you
posted.

Paulo
I also agree

Bollocks graham, your birds originate from the wild. are you saying because
they have been in captivity for a certain amount of time makes it ok?
you hypocrite. these people want to end bird keeping period, ending the
trade in birds is their first step. 90% of bird sales (for captive bred
birds) in the UK have been stopped by these animal rights fanatics.
