I need help! I have a 3 yr old male blue roan cocker spaniel who has been waking up early in the morning and whining. He wakes up about 5.30am (he sleeps in the hallway and can't get upstairs due to a gate) and starts whining which gradually gets louder and louder. We let him out for his last wee at about midnight so I think 5.30am is a little early for needing to urinate; I don't even think that's the problem. I just think he thinks " well, I'm awake now so I think everyone else should wake up!". I've read on other websites that dogs do this when they suffer with seperation anxiety but I'm convinced it's not this. At the moment I go down and shout at him till he cowers which I hate doing. He quietens down for a while but then it starts again. I really don't know what to do. I'm sat here at work falling asleep due to the problems. Please help!

I also have a blue roan cocker - we got him as a rescue dog last week.
He whines (and does a few other things) what we do is completely ignore him - never do anything when he is doing unwanted behaviour so we don't make eye contact or shout/speak to him. It works.
What you are inadvertently doing is rewarding his behaviour - ok you are shouting at him, but for him that is better than nothing.
I hope you get some sleep soon :)
BTW - he may want a wee, if you do try it, go down, let him out and let him in, don't speak to him or touch him or even look at him.

ignoring is the best way! thats correct. I would take him to see a vet and make sure that there is nothing going on health wise with him that you do not know about. If it was sudden it could be that theres a problem and he may be ill. My dog started doing this not a cocker but a collie and she was 5! it turned out that she was going senile and waking up in the middle of the night not knowing where she was and after some mediaction treatment from my vet she is prety much back to normal, i took my dog to the vet as my friend had similar and her dog had had a stroke!
