I read once in a ferret magazine that PB is *NOT* good for ferrets, but I
don't remember if it said why. I bought PB chips that were for ferrets at
petsmart, and they LOVED them.... I give them a real PB chip (the ones you
can make cookies with) every now and again for a special treat. Does anyone
know whether PB is bad for a ferret and what the reasoning is? Or do any of
you feed any type of PB to your ferret?
Thanks

My Furbys like Peanut Butter chips also, but I limit the amount they
get.
I would suspect they are not particularly good for them as they are a
vegetable
product. I'm open to other comments also.....

I don't feed PB to my ferrets, because it's a veg.
Remember that, even though there are ferret treats out there that are sold
as "ferret treats", it doesn't mean they're good for your ferret.
They sell those fruit crunch-type ferret treats - & we all know ferrets
can't digest fruit or veg. IMHO, same goes for PB treats & those marshmallow
cakes & such. Won't touch 'em w/ a ten foot pole.
For treats here, we use FerretBites (chicken), or other cat treats that are
hard (tartar control) & meat based. No Yogies or stuff like that.

I understood it that peanut butter was Ok if smooth, but not crunchy - prob
something to do with blockage forming potential of the crunchy version.
Anyway, it's high in sugar so not too much should be given.

I thought the oil in peanut butter would be OK, but it is still
vegetable based.
I tried 8 in 1 fruit and vegetable treats which both of my ferrets
liked. Because
they developed the runs, I no longer give it to them. I contacted 8
in 1 about it
with no reply.

Fruit and vegetable treats? Is that the 'intestinal blockage in a bag'
stuff? Ferrets should NOT have dried fruits or vegetables. Several
companies package them up all nice and try to pass them off as treats to
unknowing ferret owners, but they are a blockage waiting to happen. Never,
ever give dried fruits and/or vegetables to your ferret if you love him.
Those things make great trash can fillers tho!

I would think "real" PB chips are too high in sugar -- although I'm
just guessing on this, since I do not have the nutritional information
for reference.

I read that you should only give them smooth peanut butter. There is
danger that the crunchy one can cause a blockage. That is all I've ever
seen on the subject.

Great.... My ferrets favorite treats are rasins and dried bananas... The
book and magazine (Ferrets) that I get said those things, in extreme
moderation (no more than one rasin a day) are fine. I have been feeding them
to my fuzzies for over 2 years now... they have never had any side effects
to this point, I guess I am lucky with that.
Thanks for the info.

I think a lot of people give raisins in very limited amounts because they
love them so much. I'll admit to chopping a raisin in half now and then and
giving it. But the other dried banana slices, etc, are just sooo dry (and
much bigger than half a raisin too) and the ferret's digestive system is
just too short for it to have time to rehydrate before attempting to pass
thru the system, thus making it a possible blockage problem. I actually do
know one person personally whose ferret died from a blockage caused directly
by feeding KayTee Fiesta for ferrets (which has dried fruits in it), so it's
not just 'possible', it really does happen unfortunately ;-(

That is one thing the magazine said and I followed, it said to feed small
enough peices of the dried banana, that if you were to put it in water it
would become soft in like 10-15 mins... I always fed peices that were about
the size, or a little smaller than a raisin.

My kids love fresh banana - it's one of their big treats. Since it's high
in fiber, I hope it will kind of clear out the cobwebs as it goes thru :-)
They don't really get any nutrition from it since they are carnivores (meat
eaters), but they do enjoy it for a little treat now and then. I'd still
stay away from the dried ones tho. Glad you were smart enough to only give
tiny pieces! Hopefully they will pass thru. You might want to consider
giving your kids fresh banana pieces instead of the dried, since they like
the flavor. Again, it won't give them any nutrition as such, but used as a
treat in small amounts, at least it's not as likely to cause a blockage.

Oh yea, they love fresh ones too, and melons, and grapes, and watermelon...
They only get them sparingly as treats... I also give froot loops (1/2 a
loop) as a treat every now and then also...
You know, I just thought this (duh) the food that I feed them has dried
bananas in it. Very small peices, but some nonetheless. And it is ferret
food (expensive at that). Hmm, time to change that also.

Yup, I'm anxiously awaiting that 'blockage in a bag' to give a blockage to a
ferret that belongs to someone who has bucks enough to sue the pants off the
crooks that are putting it out there and hawking it as being good for them.
I'd feel sorry for the ferret, but it's happening to lots of them and the
owners never suspect unless they get them in for surgery and usually its too
late. I refuse to buy any KayTee product because if they think *that* is
good for ferrets, I can't trust them to make other items/food that is safe
for my ferret either. JMHO tho.
