I have a pair of ferrets sharing a cage and run, the hob is coming up to 2yrs old the jill 10 months, I believe she has just come into season. The hob has become very aggresive towards the jill grabing her by the neck and making her bleed, I've been told that this is normal. I would like them to breed but is this normal behaviour? Ihave separated them until I can find out the answer. If their are any experienced breeders in the forum I would appriciate any advice offered.

A hob srcuffing anything that moves is normal behavior when he is in
season. You really need to see if you jill is in season. If they
share an outdoor run it might a bit early for her to come into season.
I don't believe outside jills will be coming into season until around
mid April. The kits should be born around the end of may to early
June.

Flip your jjill over. Make sure her vulva is swollen to the size of a
pencil eraiser. Once she is in season she will send out semphore
signals to the male. Females in season can be as aggressive as males
in seaosn.. Your jill will stink more than any hob. Separate them
after the mating is done. The jill's vulva will shrink oever a period
of 2 to 4 weeks and you will notice a pronounced weight gain.

I confess I'm worried. You should know what a jill in season looks
like. Check yahoo groups using the search words "ferret breeding" and
join a list. Get a book. Ferrets for Dummies has a chapter on
breeding.

Once your jill is pregnant, you need to supplement her diet. I don't
know what you feed so I'll only make a couple of suggestions. Most
breeders use some variation on duck soup. I used regular kibble,
socaked in cream then mixed into soup with a hand mixer or blender. I
warm it up and stir in a jar of baby food, either turkey or chicken.
Brand or with/without gravy isn't important. I've also used I ams
kitten food.

I use whipping cream because it is 73% fat, you can also use unsalted
butter. which is 100$ fat. I skeip things like Ensure becuase it has
sugar in it.

You can also contact me offlist. I was a breeder for a couple of
years. I quit for health reasons. Any number of things can go wrong
and I don't know all of them. After the kits are born you still need
to keep supplement the jill's diet.

Two weeks before the kits ae due, the jill will blow her coat. Lots of
breeders will give the jill extra bedding.

I'm not a breeder by no means but it sounds as if you have no idea what
your doing and that could be dangerous for the ferrets. This is
something you should have researched LONG before you came upon a Jill
in heat. (or possible heat). etc...

>From what I do know about breeding ferrets.. it's a very difficult

thing to do...it's alot more than putting two ferrets together to 'get
the job done'. It takes ALOT of education and know how...I'm saying
this because you want to breed your ferrets and dude...you don't even
know if your jill is in heat. Not a good start. Please...think of the
ferrets.

totally normal ferret behaviour , he will screw the living daylights out of
her for the next 4 or 5 days , the hob will lose a fair bit of bodyweight
too
