Ok, anybody have any ideas on introducing a 7 month old puppy to cats and
ferrets? To the best of my knowledge she's never been around either. We're
actually considering taking her in (suckers that we are) from a co-worker of
mine. This would be at least her third home if she were to come live with
us. I know she was starved and kept outside in winter at one house she
lived at. :( I'm just a little apprehensive about introducing her to the
cats and the ferrets (although the ferrets are caged when we're not home).
She seems pretty passive, although I'm sure she'd be willing to play once
she got to know us. What do you all think?

Keep everybody on leashes for the first few intros. After that, keep
the dog leashed while the ferrets play. If it's too much, crate the
dog during the ferret's playtime. After he settles in, try again.
I brought my first two ferrets home as babies to a 2 yr old
beagle/terrier mix. I brought my second dog home as a 9 wk old puppy
to a houseful of ferrets, mink and skunk.
I don't worry about the mink with the dog, they haven't tried to kill
him. I worry a bit about the ferrets, since the dog likes to carry
them around by their heads or scruffs if he can.

Thanks Kathy. :) We're planning on crate training the puppy regardless so
I think this might help with introductions. Well, of course this depends on
whether or not we actually get the puppy. She sure is a looker and seems
pretty well behaved. :)

Holly: Puppies learn by example from the "pack leader", that's you. Dogs
by nature are inclined to hurt little animals, unless they are specifically
socialized with them. The objective is to get your puppy to accept the
little ones as members of the pack. Showing the pup by example that the
master loves the little fuzzies and treats them gently, goes a long way.
When the dog steps over the line, which is inevitable, you have to
discipline her in dog language. Instead of simply yelling at the little
puppy or worse yet, hitting her, you grab her firmly, flip her over on her
back, show her your teeth (a big smile will do) get your face down close to
her neck and growl at her. Make it sound like you really mean it. She will
instinctively get the message.
It may take two or three times, but she will obey without fear, which would
not be the case were you to hit her. You can always spot a dog who's owner
hits it by the way it lays its ears back when approached by the owner. Just
my two cents, of course. Take it FWIW. - CW

Thanks, Charles. :)
Well we brought the puppy home for a trial today. Absolutely no problems
with the cats, at least not on her part. ;-) One particular cat isn't all
that impressed, but she's never impressed with anyone. She's a Siamese
mix...that speaks for itself. ;-) She'd be much happier if we took
everybody out of the house and just paid rent for her to live here. hehe
Anyways, the puppy is very shy and pretty apprehensive outside. As far as
we can tell she's never been on a leash. And she looks as though she's
afraid we're going to beat her. :( I know that the lady we got her from
didn't hit her one bit, but where she came from before that, I have no
doubts that they did. Possibly even did worse things to her. We're kind of
just going about our business and letting her hang out in the kitchen (where
she's kind of just decided to camp). She's just timid and it will take some
time I think to bring her out of her shell.
Holly
p.s.
Haven't even tried introducing her to the ferrets. She's only been in the
living room and kitchen...so she has no idea that there's any more rooms.
