Clumsy Caique - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Rick
Hi, we're having a problem with our white-bellied caique (female, about
a year old). On average, once or twice a night while she's sleeping she
simply falls off her perch (usually with a loud thud -- fellow caique
owners will know what I'm talking about -- they're very heavy birds
for their size).

She's been checked, tested and rechecked by our avian vet, who says
she's in perfect health, so we're at a loss as to what the problem could
be. Her perches are the correct size for her feet, we've tried covering
her cage (thinking she might be frightened by something), not covering
her cage (thinking she can't see where she's stepping), etc etc etc.
Nothing has helped so far.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Maybe one of those birdie sleeping tents that hang in the cage?

I have one of these for my red lory and after a while she took to sleeping
quite happily in it every night. Strangely, if she now dozes on a perch
she sways around quite a lot and wakes herself when she nearly falls off!
However, before using the bed her balance on the perch was fine when
sleeping, so not sure what might be causing your bird's problems.

I read something a long time ago about this in Greys. It was caused by a
specific nutrition deficiency. Maybe ToucanLady remembers.

Are the perches the correct size? Make sure that they aren't those awful
smooth wooden dowel peches which she cannot grip poperly. Get a concrete
perch, rope perch or natural wooden one .

Actually they *are* wooden dowel perches -- and very smooth.
Thanks for the tip, we'll give the other perches a try. And thanks
to the others here for their responses. We did try finding a birdie
bed that's large enough to accomodate her, but no luck so far.

Did the vet check her feet and toes? Are the toe nails cut too short?
Metal toxicity, like zinc poisoning, can cause this.
If the bird is getting "night frights" I would leave a night light on.

Rick-

Try a sleepy hut or one of those little tents. Watch it for loose
threads, but both my birds love them and sleep in them. They'd have a
hard time falling out of it.
