Sprouting seeds for Bourkes - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Tom Cretain
I have a pair of Bourkes Parakeets sitting on eggs, and have been told
it may be a good idea to feed some sprouted seed. A search on the net
for sprouting instructions has turned up methods which are complicated,
time consuming, and mostly for parrots and large amounts of seeds.

After reading many pages, I plan to do the following:

-
11:00 pm - Cover a few spoonsful of seeds in water with a few drops of
bleach. Leave overnight for 12 hours. (my schedule won’t allow a shorter
time)

11:00 am next day - Rinse very well and drain. Put in a bowl and cover
with paper towel. Rinse again in the late afternoon and late evening,
draining well each time, and putting them back in bowl with paper towel
covering. Leave overnight again for 12 hours.

11:00 am on the third day - They should be ready. Feed sprouts to the
birds and refrigerate the rest for no more than two days.
-

Does this sound like a reasonable procedure? How high is the danger I
might hurt my birds with mold or fungus? The parakeets share a flight
cage with two Gouldian Finches, so they will end up sharing the seeds.

I’d appreciate advice from anyone experienced with either Bourkes or
with sprouting seeds. Are there any especially good web pages on either
topic?

I can be emailed at a3642@mindlink.bc.ca

Thanks in advance. Tom C.

I've been sprouting seed like this (using bleach too) for over 20 years.
Never had a problem with germs or mould as long as you rinse often.
