I've had 3 deaf ferrets, each one as different as could be in the past
11 yrs. Jaspar and Simon never talked but would scream if scruffed by
another ferret. Carolyn chattered all the time awake and asleep.
I got Fiona a couple of weeks ago. We were told she was deaf and
beating on a pan with a wooden spoon seemed to confirm it. She
actually dooks and talks like any hearing ferret would.
I'm curious do deaf ferrets actaully "speak correctly".

Yes...in fact my deaf ones were very vocal since they are not aware they are
even talking or dooking or clucking - LOL!

Oberon & Max are very silent - very seldom do I hear a dook unless Oberon is
*really* excited (maybe he'll let out one soft one), & Max will chuckle if
he's exploring somewhere new. They'll both hiss occasionally, if they're
really worked up. Their usual noise is a sort of breathy "hee-hee" sound.
Puck, however, was unbelievably vocal when he was a kit. Now, at 11 mos, he
sounds no different than Ariel (our only hearing ferret) did at that age. He
dooks, hisses, chuckles, hee-hee's, the whole range.
I think that, like people, they're all different.

I guess maybe that would depend on the level of deafness. At least that's
how it is with people. And maybe Fiona (love the name btw!), can hear
different tones. Dunno...just throwing thoughts out there.

We took in a 10 month old deaf gal a few weeks back, it
brings our group up to 6, 2F 4M, and she is by far the most
vocal one of our gang. More vocal than any other one I have
had in the past and being the first deaf one is living up to
everything I had heard in read in the past regarding this.
Oh by the way, being a female, she is typically a hand full having
to re-ferret proof the place because she can find a new angle to
get into things.
