I have two ferrets, whify and wombat. Whify is now very ill and we don't
expect her to live much longer. Unfortunately she has cancer which has
also lead to ascites (swelling of he abdomen). Wombat, her sister is
approx 5 years old, I want her to be able to have kits this season so she
will have some acceptable company (she has never taken to any other
ferrets other than Whify). Is 5 years old too old? Can anyone advise me
on this?

I'm not a breeder, but my question would be this: I'm assuming you've bred
this ferret in the past? If not, how is it that you have a 5 yr old unspayed
ferret that's still alive?

I'm wondering about that too, Lin.
And if it's her first time I wouldn't take the risk......

Skipping my personal opinion, you start breeding a jill at 1 yr old and
retire her at 3 yrs old. Assuming your ferret is still whole, breeding
her would be dangerous to her health and plain inhumane.
If you ferret doesn't want another companion, don't get her one.
If you really want babies, go adopt a rescue and it away from your girl
or wait until she dies and then get another ferret.

(Kat...sorry....I hit wrong 'send' function and sent it to you privately
when it was supposed to come here.....)
Look at the names of the ferrets...Whify and Wombat....
It would be my guess that this poster is from the UK somewhere..England? Or
even down under??
Gang..I never had Tuzi spayed...when she came into season, I just gave her
an HCG shot to bring her out.
No biggie...
Adoption might not be an option where they live.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I have a five year old unspayed ferret as I
don't believe in spaying or de scenting ferrets. I take mine as nature
intended and use a castrated male and or the jill jab if either come back
into season.

Hi , thanks for you advice. I was thinking she may be too old hence I
needed to find out. I am based in the UK and ferrets are not so popular
here as in the US as domestic pets. I would not dream of putting her
through this ordeal if it was likely to hurt her in any way. She is very
close to Whify and they go everywhere together so it will be hard for her
when Whify finally leaves us. Looks like she will have to get used to
being on her own for a while except when the castrated male visits whom
she loves.
Thanks for your opinion.

ftr (seems to be an "ftr" kinda day) - you need a *vasectomized* hob
to take care of that sort of business. A castrated hob won't show any
interest unless he's adrenal.
