My Mischief has started some odd behaviour. She is spayed, and old enough
to have been found in heat last summer/autumn. We got her in November last
year from the lady who found her. She's been eating well and seems fine -
except for this:

She's recently fixated on the fuzzy tennis balls and keeps shuffling them
'round and 'round the living room chair, at least 5 or 6 times in
succession, then a quick dig of the carpet, then starts again.

The digging doesn't worry us - it's this sudden obsession with the tennis
balls. Could she be nesting or feeling broody? Her lady-bits are not
swollen and she hasn't changed any other behaviour, and the boys are not
reacting any differently towards her.

If anyone can shed some light on this, it will be appreciated.

That's normal behaviour for a ferret, it's the only way that they can move
the balls in the direction they want to. Ferrets will collect & try to hide
all sorts of objects and they handle large items in this manner.

Yes, but she scoots *one ball all the way round the chair for many
revolutions* - I could understand her if she just scooted it into the corner
and left it, but she goes round behind the chair... and then brings it round
the front again - and always in the same direction!
Puzzling :o)

P: Sounds normal to me. For some fun, roll the ball across the floor and
watch her chase it. Good exercise. - CW

Still normal, Paula. :) I've had numerous ferrets that love to do circles
with their toys. I guess, you can learn a lesson from this
really....something that strikes us as odd or boring brings complete
happiness to a ferret. :)

Fair enough ;o) I've just never seen this before: Rumpus moves his balls
from place to place, and they all like to try and stash toys, but this
circles thing is a new one on me. I was just worried that this could be a
manifestation of something going wrong, along the lines of, "If this is
nesting behaviour, why's it happening if she's spayed?"

Minya used to get a tennis ball into her front legs, clasped to her chest, and
back up dragging it with her across the room, usually until she'd backed under
the couch. Then she'd come out pushing it with her nose across the room until
she went under the other couch. Then repeat. sometimes she'd drag the thing
around backwards all over the place with the backwards motion bit never pushing
it at all.
