IF your boy is going to be a brat you might want to consider getting
gloves, tricking him into a carrier when you need to move him around.
I'd strongly suggest getting a playpen. I've been using them for 7 or
8 yrs now and find them extremely convienant.
You can buy a Marshall's playpen from some pet stores or at the Ferret
Store.
You can make one of your own at home. No tools required. Get 4
plastic pegboards, a bag of computer ties, 2 or 3 pipe cleaners and a
roll of linoleum. Put the panels together with the computer ties.
Roll out the linoleum and put the playpen on top of it. Hold one side
together with pipe cleaners so you can take the playpen down and fold
it away somewhere. Or you could just but the ties on one side.
All you need is a litter box, a bowl of food and water, some bedding to
burrow into and some toys.

I'd try the melatonin. As jacquie said, you will find conflicting views
on whether it helps - but I haven't ever seen where it hurts. Worse
case scenario is that it has no effect.
If it were my ferret, I'd say the Melatonin is worth a shot. I feel for
you and your fuzzy. One can only imagine that he has to feel like crap
to go from a sweet cuddler to irritable and aggressive.
